MIAMI FL May 10 2017 Authorities say a Broward sheriff's detention deputy is accused of running over a security guard's foot during a search for his girlfriend's lost cellphone.
Sun Sentinel reports 43-year-old Wendell Shepherd was arrested Monday and charged with aggravated battery with great bodily harm.
According to an incident report, Shepherd was speeding toward the entrance gate of a parking lot and waved off the security guard's signals to stop and then ran over the security officer's foot.
Police say Shepherd was so caught up in the phone search that he never acknowledged the security guard's injury. Another officer also witnessed the incident.
Shepherd was arrested at 11:15 p.m. Sunday at Virginia Key Beach in Miami. He is facing a charge of aggravated battery with great bodily harm.
Shepherd, who works in the jail, will be suspended with pay, a spokeswoman for the Broward Sheriff’s Office said Monday. He was hired in 2001.
Speeding toward an entrance gate in a red Mercedes-Benz, Shepherd waved off the security officer’s signals to stop, accelerated and ran over the guard’s foot as he tried to jump out of the way, the report said.
Once in the parking lot, Shepherd jumped out of the car, exclaiming: “My girl lost her phone.”
Paramedics came to the scene and advised that the security guard’s left ankle appeared to be broken, the report said.
It's unclear if Shepherd has an attorney.
