Fort Wayne IN March 7 2017 A suspected shoplifter took an unusual route to elude police Wednesday when he hopped on a moving freight train after being chased in his car, police said.
The unidentified man left the Sears store in Glenbrook Square on Fort Wayne’s north side around 1:40 p.m. in a tan four-door Ford passenger car after loss prevention personnel phoned in a shoplifting in progress, police said.
A Fort Wayne officer spotted the car driving south on Clinton Street and tried to pull the man over.
The suspect ignored the officer and was pursued on Clinton and then west on Fourth Street. He then drove onto the Rivergreenway, a bike and hiking trail, for a short distance before driving back on to Harrison Street where the chase briefly stopped.
Another officer saw the vehicle further east and attempted a traffic stop that resulted in another pursuit, this time when the suspect drove his car along the railroad tracks near Grant Avenue.
The suspect bailed from his car and jumped on to a moving freight train, hanging on for a few blocks before he jumped off and eventually was taken into custody by police.
Multiple charges are pending against the man, police said.
