Police responded to an armed man incident at the Sea Colony community and found that a security officer had been attacked by a man with an assault rifle.
After responding to the 911 call at 8:35 p.m., police found that security officer Michael Wescott, 46, had been attack and beaten with the stock of an AK-47. Police say that the man had delivered several blows before pursuing the victim out of the guard shack.
Officers quickly located and charged Jake Andrew Dewerth, 19, of 888 Ocean Palm, with aggravated assault as well as aggravated battery with a deadly weapon, two counts of fraud and burglary.
Video surveillance revealed Dewerth holding the rifle to Wescott’s head and attempting to fire the weapon before continuing to strike him.
The first responding officer found the security office empty but “with obvious signs a violent crime had been committed.” The officer was then approached by Wescott who said he fled the area during the attack but returned to the scene after seeing the officer.
Pieces of the weapon, along with blood pools and splatter, were found throughout the security area and roadway. Wescott was transported to Flagler Hospital by St. Johns County Fire Rescue with serious bodily injuries including a dislocated jaw, broken nose and a fractured cheek bone.
With additional responding officers and the assistance of the St. Johns County Sheriff Office, police say Dewerth was located on the roadway near the community’s guard gate with blood on his clothing and bodily evidence of a violent confrontation.
Dewerth was taken to the St. Johns County jail and is being held without bond.
