CANON CITY CO Feb 11 2017— A 44-year-old male Canon City High School teacher was arrested Wednesday for investigation of felony sexual assault on a child and sexual exploitation of a child.
Robert Davidson was arrested Wednesday evening after the mother of a 16-year-old student reported she suspected an inappropriate relationship between her daughter and Davidson, according to an arrest warrant affidavit. Davidson, who is a Junior ROTC teacher at Canon City High School, was placed on administrative leave by the school district Monday pending outcome of an investigation. He started work in that position at the beginning of the school year, said George Welsh, superintendent of schools.
Davidson’s arrest comes in the wake of Monday’s arrest of Austin Trahern, 24, a former Canon City High School assistant track coach accused of sexually assaulting a 15-year old student; and the 2015 sexting scandal during which 106 Canon City students were accused of swapping 351 nude or inappropriate pictures of underage subjects. Then-District Attorney Thom LeDoux did not file charges in that case due to the fact that the majority of photos did not have faces to prove identity.
Davidson, who made an initial court appearance Thursday, is a 22-year veteran of the military, having attained the rank of major. Davidson most recently taught military affairs at Kent College and has no criminal history, said Public Defender Kelly Page, who was appointed to represent him.
Page pushed for a personal recognizance bond for Davidson, who has a fiance and 2-year-old son, she said, however Fremont County District Court Judge Ramsey Lama set bail at $10,000. LeDoux, now assistant district attorney, asked that Davidson be restrained from having contact with the victim, her family or anyone under the age of 18 and surrender his passport.
At the request of Page, Lama said Davidson could have contact with his 2-year-old son. Lama also ordered Davidson to avoid going within 200 yards of Canon City High School.
According to the affidavit authored by Canon City police Detective Sgt. Derek Irvine, the victim voluntarily gave up her cellphone which contained nude photos of a male’s genitals and a photo of Davidson in the shower taken from the chest up. The phone also allegedly contained text messages between the victim and Davidson that included talk of sexual acts they reportedly had together.
Irvine interviewed Davidson, who denied having a physical relationship with any student, although he later admitted that he has hugged the victim. Davidson also admitted to taking the victim on a motorcycle ride from his home to Penrose and back to Canon City.
Davidson told Irvine the sexual talk included the victim texting him pictures of her nude breasts. Davidson said he “doesn’t know why” he did not report the nude photos to school officials, according to the affidavit.
Davidson is slated to return to court Wednesday for filing of charges.
