Inmate dies in Richmond jail infirmary - the 6th to die at Richmond City jail this year

Richmond VA Dec 22 2016 An inmate at the Richmond City Justice Center died Tuesday morning in the infirmary bathroom.
Trevino L. Mitchell was found unresponsive in a private bathroom in the jail's infirmary at 10:50 a.m. Tuesday, according to a statement from the jail. Mitchell was earlier seen "walking upright" to the bathroom "with no visible signs of physical distress," jail officials said. Sometime later, a deputy found Mitchell on the toilet.
Mitchell is the sixth inmate to die at the Richmond City jail this year.
The Richmond County Sheriff's Office, which oversees the jail, and Richmond Police Department are conducting a joint investigation. They are currently waiting for a preliminary autopsy and toxicology report from the Office of the Medical Examiner in order to determine the exact cause of death.
Mitchell was jailed on Dec. 13 without bond on two felony charges of possession of a controlled substance with intent to distribute.

Lawsuits against jails, sheriffs and state hospitals have cost taxpayers more than $38.6 million.
