Morgan County AL Dec 17 2016 A 22-year-old Alabama jail corrections officer is accused of having sexual contact with an inmate.
Morgan County Jail corrections officer Telly Atkins, of Tanner, is charged with two misdemeanor counts of promoting prison contraband and Class C felony custodial sexual misconduct, Sheriff Ana Franklin said today.
Atkins is accused of having consensual sexual contact with the inmate and also smuggling cigarettes and a cellphone battery into the jail, Franklin said.
Authorities began investigating Atkins when a cellphone was discovered in an inmate's cell, said sheriff's Lt. Terry Kelly.
Franklin said her office has initiated the process of terminating Atkins' employment.
"Part of our job is to constantly monitor the jail, including our employees," Franklin said. "When we find things that either are an administrative violation or criminal, we investigate the situation and do our due diligence to make a complete investigation just like we would with any other citizen."
Franklin said she couldn't comment on the inmate's age or other information to protect the person's identity. She also declined to comment on the charges for which the inmate is housed.
"Through the normal course of our security and safety procedures within jail, we are constantly monitoring to make sure our employees as well as the inmates are safe," Franklin said.
Atkins was released from the Morgan County Jail after posting a $3,100 bond.
If convicted of the felony, Atkins faces up to 10 years imprisonment.
