Durban South Africa Nov 7 2016 – A University of Johannesburg student was shot and killed in the early hours of Saturday, allegedly by a security guard at an accredited off-campus residence, the university said on Sunday.
UJ spokesperson, Kaamini Reddy, said the first year student, who cannot be named until his family has been notified, succumbed to his injuries.
“The security guard was not employed by UJ. He is part of security provided by the owner of the residence, which was accredited by the university.”
According to EWN the security guard fled the scene soon after the incident.
Reddy said the police were investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident.
She said it was difficult to say what had happened because the incident happened outside of university hours and off campus.

“There is a lot of speculation that the security guard was employed by the university but this is not true. However, we send our deepest condolences to the family for their loss,” said Reddy.
