GEORGIANA, Ala. Oct 20 2016 The south Alabama town of Georgiana is without a police force after the chief and most of its officers resigned.
David Scruggs said he quit as chief Monday following a series of disagreements with Mayor Jerome Antone.
The City Council voted to accept the resignations during a meeting Tuesday and is now asking the Butler County Sheriff's Department to fill in until new officers can be hired.
The council agreed to request an investigation by the state attorney general's office into allegations made by the former officers against the mayor's office. Members also will request a forensic audit of the city, its municipal court and the police department.
The mayor will find a new chief. Antone says he's in control of the city of 1,700 residents.
