Hempstead Village Police crossing guard struck by truck and killed

HEMPSTEAD, Long Island NY Oct 29 2016 A 67 year old veteran school crossing guard on Long Island was struck and killed by an 18-wheeler Friday morning.
The longtime crossing guard is an employee of the Hempstead Village Police Department.
Police at the scene said that she had three daughters and a granddaughter.
The woman, who was employed by the village of West Hempstead, was on the side of the road when she was hit by the Mack truck as it was making a turn onto South Franklin Street, according to authorities.
Witnesses said that she had put up a sign for the truck to stop, but its driver either didn’t see it or ignored it. They said that two girls were in front of the guard when she was hit.
Police said that the fatality appears to be a horrible accident. No arrests have been made.

An official said initial reports were that the guard may have been “shielding a child” when she was fatally struck at the intersection of South Franklin Street and Grove Street at about 7:30 a.m. Hempstead Village police and Nassau County police, both have detectives investigating the accident.
