Coral Gables FL April 9 2017 A trainer dismissed from his job at a Florida Equinox fitness center returned to the upscale mall that houses the gym and opened fire, injuring two people before turning the gun on himself, police said.
Coral Gables Police Chief Edward J. Hudak told Local 10 News the incident stemmed from a managerial dispute that prompted the former gym employee to target two others who also worked at the fitness center.
Those injured in the attack were both airlifted to Jackson Memorial Hospitals’ Ryder Trauma Center, the news station reported.
Witnesses said one of the injured was conscious after the shooting, though bleeding heavily, while the other victim lay motionless on the ground, according to the Miami Herald
Another trainer at the fitness center told one of his members the shooting involved a disgruntled former employee.
“I had just left Equinox,” Shed Boren told the newspaper. “I heard from a trainer that it was a trainer that had been let go. The general manager and one of the trainers were shot.”
Another witness inside the gym when the shooting occurred said he knew the shooter and described him as "quiet," but "nice guy."
"He's not a crazy guy," he told the Herald. "This wasn't someone who decided to kill a bunch of people. There was a dance class of 40 people if he wanted to do that. This was personal."
Police responded to the Shops at Merrick Park in Coral Gables around 1 p.m. The incident sent shoppers running across the mall, which includes shops like Nordstrom and Neiman-Marcus.
A Coral Gables Police Spokesperson said the scene was secured by 1:45 p.m and officers are currently investigating the incident.
"The scene is secure and no one is in danger at this time," Detective Alvaro Zabaleta told the news station.
