New York Feb 25 2017 There’s always a chance that there could be contraband in the cauliflower, but this is radicchio.
Correction officers on Rikers Island arrested a woman hiding in the back of a vegetable delivery truck as it was leaving the jail Wednesday at around 3 a.m., the Daily News has learned.
The two deliverymen in the truck told authorities that Shaquitta Ellison, 36, was hiding in the back because they didn’t want to leave her outside the jail during their drop-off.
“She stayed in the truck while they made their deliveries,” a correction source said.
Even though she didn’t go into the facilities, Ellison was arrested and charged with criminal trespassing, because she does not have a security clearance, another source said.
The deliverymen had their own security clearances squashed, a jail insider said.
Rikers officials have detected a tide of illegal items entering the facility.
Last year, a corrupt crew of city correction officers, inmates and even a jail cook were busted for smuggling weapons and drugs past security.
The 17 arrested included a jail cook, 27-year-old Darnell Wilson, who admitted to taking $200 a week to sneak in K2 and tobacco, officials said.
