Newark NJ Jan 8 2017 Three people have been charged with running an organized shoplifting ring in Newark, according to city police.
The Newark Police Special Operations Unit discovered inside the Acme at Suburban Plaza three people who were previously suspected of conducting shoplifting rings throughout New Castle County, said Lt. Bill Hargrove, a spokesman for the department.
On Dec. 30 – that same day – police watched the trio shoplift again and arrested them when they tried to leave the store, Hargrove said.
An Asset Protection Specialist at the Acme first alerted police to the theft ring, who also told Delaware State Police and neighboring agencies. Hargrove said state police were also looking for the trio.
The trio was charged for the Dec. 30 incident, as well as previous shoplifting incidents, which all occurred at the same Acme.
Kevin Hardy, 47, was charged with theft - organized retail crime, criminal solicitation, five counts of shoplifting and five counts of conspiracy. He was taken to Young Correctional Institution in Wilmington on $10,200 secured bail.
Shalayiah Rothwell, 22, was charged with four counts of shoplifting and four counts of conspiracy. She was taken to Baylor Women's Correctional Institution near New Castle on $400 secured bond.
Donald Williamson, 52, was charged with three counts of shoplifting and three counts of conspiracy. He was taken to Young Correctional Institution in Wilmington on $1,800 secured bail.
