Natick NY Jan 15 2017 A Franklin woman kicked a Lord & Taylor security officer on Thursday after she and an Oxford woman were caught shoplifting, authorities said.
Natick Police arrested Betty Marie Melo, 36, of Franklin, and Melissa E. Allen, 31, of Oxford, after they were caught stealing four FitBits and a tank top from the Natick Mall store around 4:43 p.m., prosecutor Francesca Cone said Friday during the pair's Natick District Court arraignment.
On Thursday, Lord & Taylor security saw Melo and Allen take two Fitbits - an electronic item worn as a watch that tracks exercise - and hide them in some clothing. They then went into a dressing room together.
When store security guards stopped them from leaving the store, Melo kicked one of them repeatedly. When police arrived, they searched Melo and found that she had fentanyl, a prescription pain pill, Cone said.
In all, the pair stole four FitBits and a tank top. The total value of the items stolen was $850.
Police charged both Melo, of 233 Washington St., Franklin, and Allen, of 130 Orchard Hill Road, Oxford, with larceny of property worth more than $250 and conspiracy to commit a crime.
Melo was also charged with assault and battery and possession of fentanyl without a prescription.
Cone did not ask Judge Martine Carroll to hold Allen, but asked the judge to hold Melo on $1,500 bail. She said Melo has a long criminal history that includes larceny and forgery charges.
Melo's lawyer, David Levinson, asked for $200 bail. He said Melo has not been charged with a crime in more than a year.
"I would say $1,500 is excessive, given her record," Melo said.
Carroll ordered Melo held on $300 bail. Both are due back in court on Feb. 10 for a pretrial conference.
