Emporia KS Jan 8 2017 A Kansas medical facility has become the latest to add armed security staff to patrol their facility.
Calling it an unfortunate sign of the times nationally, Newman Regional Health Chief Executive Officer Bob Wright says the hospital has had to add armed security officers as a preventive measure.
Wright says the hospital's goal is to make sure patients and staffers are safe.
Wright told area media outlets recently that the move towards increased security reflects trends towards violence and increased mental health concerns in hospital emergency rooms across the country. Most of the violence is in larger cities, but Wright says it's starting to filter out into rural areas as well.
Other security measures will also be coming soon he said.
During the past three years, medical facilities including doctor’s offices, treatment centers and hospitals have begun to arm their security personnel in light of recent active shooting incidents and workplace violence.

Newman Regional Health now has security officers that all have law enforcement experience, whether they are currently on a local police force or were at one time according to Wright.
