Los Angeles CA Jan 15 2017 A knife-wielding man fatally shot by police in downtown Los Angeles earlier this week is believed to have fatally stabbed a woman a short time earlier in his nearby apartment, authorities said Friday.
Michael Rogers, 32, was shot by police about 4:50 p.m. Tuesday near Hope and 11th streets and died at a hospital, according to police and the coroner’s office. Lisa Ramirez, 32, of Pico Rivera was found dead about a block away inside Rogers’ apartment in the 1100 block of Flower Street.
Ramirez had worked in the building as a custodian, the Los Angeles Police Department reported.
“Investigators believe that Rogers lured Miss Ramirez into his apartment around 3:20 p.m. (Tuesday) and then stabbed her multiple times causing her death,” an LAPD statement said.
“Rogers then fled the scene on foot and was later discovered one block away on Hope Street,” police said. “Investigators discovered that Rogers went inside another residential building where he wandered about the 15th floor.”
A security officer from that building escorted Rogers out of the site, and Rogers then tried to carjack a Department of Transportation officer’s vehicle at knifepoint, police said.
“As Rogers attempted to take the DOT vehicle, a security guard from a nearby building observed the carjacking and responded to help the DOT officer,” police said. “The security guard and the DOT officer were able to fend off Rogers, who abandoned his attempt to take the DOT vehicle.”
Meanwhile, officers from the LAPD’s Central Traffic Division were driving south on Hope Street and the DOT officer flagged them down, police said.
“Suddenly, Rogers charged at the driver’s side of the police vehicle armed with a knife,” police said. “The officers quickly drove away from Rogers and made a U-turn to re-approach him.”
Rogers then entered a business, still armed with the knife, and came outside and began walking toward the officers, police said.
“Officer David Machain who was standing behind the passenger door of his police car ordered Rogers to stop and drop the knife several times,” police said.
“Suddenly Rogers ran directly toward Officer Machain screaming `I’m going to kill you,’ ” police said. “Officer Machain continued yelling at Rogers to stop, but Rogers continued to run at Officer Machain with the knife.
Officer Machain fired several rounds at Rogers as he came within a few feet of Officer Machain,” police said. “Rogers was struck by the gunfire and fell to the ground.”
No officers or civilians were injured.
“A short time later, a citizen approached one of the officers and reported that she had just arrived home and discovered the body of a woman in her residence,” police said. “Officers and a supervisor responded to her residence … to investigate her report of a possible dead woman.”
Officers went to the apartment and found Ramirez dead. The relationship between the suspect and the woman who found the body was not disclosed by police.
According to investigators, Rogers had several prior domestic violence arrests resulting in two felony convictions, and was on probation for domestic violence. A motive for the was not known, police said.

Anyone with information on the case was urged to call the LAPD Force Investigation Division at (213) 486-5230, or (877) LAPD-247.
