Virginia Beach VA Dec 2 2016 Virginia Beach Sheriff Deputy died in a crash in the 2000 block of Livingston Oak Drive early Thursday morning, according to Virginia Beach police.
Deputy Edgardo Lucero, 56, of Virginia Beach, was driving a 1999 Dodge Caravan that collided with a 2015 Ford Edge about 6:30 a.m., police said. The Caravan was driving east, and the Ford Edge was driving west on Livingston Oak Drive at the intersection of Outerbridge Quay, police said. The cars collided when the Caravan traveled into the westbound lane, according to police.
The driver of the Ford Edge was taken to a local hospital and has since been released, police said.
Police are not looking into speed or alcohol as factors, and the Department's Fatal Accident Crash Team is investigating.
Lucero worked for the Virginia Beach Sheriff’s Office for 15 years and was currently a corrections officer at the Virginia Beach Correctional Center, sheriff’s office spokeswoman Kathy Hieatt wrote in an email.
“Deputy Edgardo Lucero was a good man and a good deputy who faithfully served the Virginia Beach Sheriff’s Office,” Hieatt wrote. “Our deputies will be draping their badges in honor of Deputy Lucero until his burial.”
