Investigations are under way after a Richards Bay G4S security guard was brutally killed during a cash-in-transit robbery.
The guard was transferring cash from the security vehicle into an ATM inside the southbound Engen 1-Stop just outside Empangeni when a crew of at least six men, all armed with handguns, struck just after 8am on Monday, Zululand Observer reported.
According to Empangeni police spokesperson Captain Mbongeni Mdlalose, the 31-year-old was shot at least twice in the head and chest at close range.
He confirmed the guard had not opened fire on the suspects but had complied with their instructions and was lying on the ground when shot.
A case of murder and robbery with aggravating circumstances is being investigated.
