ST. PETERSBURG FL Nov 11 2016- A day after a Pinellas County school crossing guard was hit and killed by a suspected drunk driver, he was remembered by the community.
David Roundtree was a crossing guard for Mount Vernon Elementary School. Minutes before students were released Tuesday, he was hit on 9th Avenue N.
St. Petersburg police said Roundtree had just finished putting orange cones out on the roadway, preparing for students to make their way home. That's when a silver Toyota Scion, driven by 21-year-old Charles Hunter Walton, hit a pickup truck, then hit the 72-year-old.
Witnesses called for help, but the crossing guard was pronounced dead at the hospital.
Police charged Walton with DUI manslaughter. He had an 18-year-old woman riding with him. She was not charged.
Roundtree's daughter came to the scene and was visibly upset. His wife spoke to FOX 13 News Wednesday.
"I went to bed at 3 o'clock this morning... then I got up... I was walking through the house, looking for him. It's not..." David's wife, Mabel Roundtree trailed off. "It's hard its hard its hard."
