GUILDERLAND NY Oct 17 2016 — A mall brawl broke out last Wednesday, Guilderland Police say, when a woman and 14-year-old girl tried to stop security officers from arresting a man for shoplifting.
Police responded to Crossgates Mall on Oct. 12 for a report of a shoplifter at the Hollister store, and wound up stopping an assault on four Hollister security officers.
Two of the store’s security officers received “considerable injuries,” Deputy Police Chief Curtis Cox told The Enterprise.
When police arrived, a crowd of about 50 people were watching from the mall’s second story as Hollister security officers attempted, outside the first floor of the neighboring H&M store, to take the suspect, Sharod A. Walters, 28, of Harts Lane, Menands, into custody, Cox said.
A woman and a juvenile assaulted the store security officers in an effort to keep them from taking Walters into custody. The woman was listed in a Guilderland Police press release as Natika Quashone Miller, 34, of Morris Street, Albany. The juvenile, a girl aged 14, was not named by police.
Two members of the store’s security staff were injured, Cox said.
According to Cox, Miller and the 14-year-old girl punched the two store security officers in the face; they also scratched one of the officers in the neck and cheek, ripped an officer’s shirt, broke an officer’s eyeglasses, and kicked an officer in the back.
Police charged Walters with petit larceny and third-degree assault, both misdemeanors; they charged the 14-year-old with petit larceny. Miller was charged with third-degree assault, fourth-degree criminal mischief, and endangering the welfare of a child, all misdemeanors.
The adults were released on tickets to appear in Guilderland Town Court on Oct. 20., while the 14-year-old will be referred to Albany County Probation and was released to the custody of her mother.
