Fort Worth security officer's throat slashed during bank robbery www.privateofficer.com

Dec 31 2011 A violent altercation after the robbery of a Fort Worth credit union has put both the suspect and officer responding in the hospital.

According to officials, around 9:45 a.m. the suspect entered the Fort Worth Community Credit Union on 6454 Brentwood Stair Road and presented a note demanding money to a teller.

After the suspect left, an employee notified the off-duty Tarrant County deputy who was working security of the robbery. The deputy ran after and caught up with the suspect.

A confrontation in the parking lot led to the suspect stabbing the deputy in the neck. The deputy shot the suspect in the head during the confrontation. Both men were taken to area hospitals.

Terry Grisham of the Tarrant County Sheriff's office indentified the injured deputry as Frederick Bauer. Bauer, 58, is a eight year veteran of the Tarrant County Sheriff's Department and is considered an experienced deputy approved to work off-duty at a credit union.

Grisham said an routine internal investigation is being undertaken concerning Bauer's use of deadly force during the incident.

Fort Worth Police Sgt. Pedro Criado and Tarrant County Sheriff Dee Anderson provided information at the scene to NBC 5 crews and said that police have arrested the suspect and have him under guard at John Peter Smith Hospital. The name of the suspect has not yet been not released.

The suspect is expected to be charged with aggravated robbery and attempted capital murder, according to Criado.

Officials say a possible suspect getaway vehicle was in the parking lot and fled the scene. Police are trying to determine if broken glass found in the parking lot is from the deputy shooting at the car. Grisham says Bauer may have wounded the driver of the supposed getaway vehicle. That suspect is still at large.

This is the second time that the Fort Worth Community Credit Union was robbed this month.

No employees or customers of the credit union were injured.

Observant security guard provides tip to bust robbery trio www.privateofficer.com

Rochester NY Dec 31 2011 An observant security guard on his lunch break provided a tip that cracked the case of armed robberies and eight businesses in four Monroe County communities this month.

Brothers Jacob and Jeffrey Buchanan and Jacob’s girlfriend Sarah Cushman are all facing multiple counts of first-degree robbery and fourth-degree grand larceny, both felonies, in connection with the robberies, mainly at tanning salons, between Dec. 7 and 23, Rochester Police Sgt. Naser Zenelovic said during a news conference today. All three have “significant” criminal backgrounds, he said, but declined to elaborate.

Jacob Buchanan, 22, of Rochester is accused of taking part in six of the eight armed robberies in Rochester, Brighton, Greece and Irondequoit. Cushman, 26, of Rochester, is accused of participating in five robberies and Jeffrey Buchanan, 20, of Gates is accused of participating in the first two.

Seven businesses were robbed over the 16-day period, including a Brighton tanning salon that was robbed twice. Five of the businesses are tanning salons and the other two are near previously robbed salons.

In all but one robbery, the suspect displayed a knife, threatened the clerk and demanded cash, he said. At one of the stores, a tanning salon in Rochester, a handgun was displayed. No one was injured in any of the robberies.

Zenelovic said investigators believed the trio targeted tanning salons because Cushman had previously worked at one in the area and knew how such salons operated. He said police do not believe she previously worked at any of the affected salons.

Although the four departments were together investigating the robberies and had studied video footage of the suspects for more than two weeks, it was a tip from an observant security guard at a Brighton tanning salon that led to the arrests, Zenelovic said.

The guard was eating a sandwich in his car the evening of Dec. 23 when he saw a woman run from the salon and get into a nearby vehicle, Zenelovic said. He copied down the vehicle’s plate information, which led to a neighborhood canvass and ultimately all three arrests.

That security guard had worked at the salon only one day, Zenelovic said. He was hired after an armed robbery there the previous morning because employees were frightened.

The group is accused of stealing several hundred in cash from each business. Some of the money was recovered.

Jacob Buchanan and Cushman were apprehended early Christmas Eve. Jeffrey Buchanan was arrested two days later. All three are in the Monroe County Jail.

Zenelovic said the trio confessed “to a number of the jobs” while in custody. The case will be reviewed by a grand jury.

Delaware nightclub security agent injured in 100 person brawl www.privateofficer.com

SELBYVILLE DE Dec 31 2011 -- A 26-year-old security staff member at Pomeroy's Tavern on DuPont Boulevard was sent to the hospital after he was struck in the head with a chair during a 100-person melee in the early hours of Christmas Eve.

Police said the fight originated inside the tavern at approximately 1:30 a.m., at which time the owner of the tavern sprayed the entire bar and club area with pepper spray in an attempt to force everyone outside.

According to police, approximately 100 disorderly people continued to fight in the venue's parking lot.

Multiple police agencies responded to assist the Selbyville Police Department, including Delaware State Police and units from Millsboro, Ocean View, Bethany Beach and Fenwick Island.

The victim was transported to Atlantic General Hospital due to a head laceration that required stitches. He was treated and released later in the morning.

No suspects have been identified at this time.

Police Chief W. Scott Collins said the location has been a trouble spot in the past. As recently as last fall, fights at Pomeroy's were considered by police to be a weekly occurrence.

"We have had multiple fights like this at this location off and on for the past year," he said.

Collins said there was a point in time at which it was bad enough that police had meetings with the owners of the restaurant and their attorneys to discuss issues such as security staffing and loitering.

"They've done a good job of policing their own issues, which was nice," he said. "That really made a huge difference."

Police activity at Pomeroy's had slowed down "quite a bit" during the past few months, Collins said, but within the last month and a half, there have been two incidents at the tavern.

The fight took place as the Selbyville Town Council considers a code amendment that would prohibit the sale of alcoholic beverages in town restaurants after 11 p.m. and consumption after 11:30 p.m. The sale and consumption of alcohol would resume at 9 a.m. the following day.

The amendment is being considered because the council thinks there is a link between late-night alcohol sales and illegal and offensive conduct.

The amendment went to a public hearing Dec. 5 and was then tabled by the council. The issue is not on the agenda for the next Town Council meeting, which is scheduled for Jan. 9.

Tacoma Community College music instructor tricked teenager to take off clothes www.privateofficer.com

Tacoma WA Dec 31 2011 Authorities in Washington say a former Tacoma Community College music instructor tricked a teenage voice student to take off her clothes off while singing in hopes she would reach lower octaves.

The Tacoma News Tribune reports 37-year-old Kevin Gausepohl is charged with seven counts of communicating with a minor for immoral purposes and one count of obstructing a law enforcement officer.

Investigators say he told a Gig Harbor High School student he was conducting a study on how sexual arousal affects vocal ranges. The girl was 17 at the time. She was attending the school as part of the Running Start program that allows high schoolers to take college courses.

Other students told investigators they were also approached by Gausepohl, who resigned in October and denies the allegations.

7 Cedars Casino employees save man having heart attack www.privateofficer.com

BLYN WA Dec 31 2011 — The man had stopped breathing and was close to death as he lay on the floor of 7 Cedars Casino.

But casino employees, including former Jefferson County Undersheriff Ken Sukert, helped revive him after he suffered a heart attack at about 2 p.m. Wednesday, casino security manager Robin Allen and Sequim Fire District No. 3 personnel said Thursday.

The victim, a former 7 Cedars security employee, was listed in stable condition at Olympic Medical Center on Thursday morning.

“They started CPR [cardiopulmonary resuscitation] immediately and continued to do it, and that played a huge role in contributing to his good outcome,” Sequim Fire District No. 3 Medical Safety Officer Bryan Swanberg said Thursday.

Allen said he believes the man lives in the Sequim area and may be in his early 70s.

Totem Lounge

He was sitting at the bar in the Totem Lounge next to the security podium when he fell out of his chair and landed flat on his back, Allen said.

“I observed the entire event,” Allen said, adding that he watched Sukert, a member of the casino’s security staff, spring into action.

“He was with [him] within 15 seconds,” Allen said.

Sukert, who was unavailable for comment Thursday, checked the victim’s vital signs.

“There was no pulse, no breathing, and he [Sukert] began CPR,” Allen recalled.

Casino information technology department employee Bob Foster, an emergency medical technician, took over the procedure from Sukert, Allen said.

Clallam County Fire District No. 3 personnel, whose station is within a quarter-mile east of the casino, arrived within two minutes of being called and conducted CPR on the man for about 25 minutes.

“He was not breathing when we arrived,” Swanberg said.

District personnel administered jolts from an automated external defibrillator, or AED.

“After the third shock, he started to breathe on his own, and he got a pulse back at that point,” Swanberg said.

In the ambulance

While an ambulance transported the victim to the hospital, he started to “come around,” resisting the medical apparatus he was tethered to, District No. 3 spokesman Patrick Young said.

Brain death can start in three to five minutes of when a person stops breathing, Young said.

“We do CPR on a regular basis, and to have a survivable outcome because of the immediacy of CPR is the rarity,” he said, adding that too often, those who witness heart attacks are unwilling to start the emergency procedure.

During CPR, a trained provider compresses the chest to create artificial circulation and provides breaths for a person who is not breathing and whose heart has stopped.

“Immediate CPR supplements what’s left in the body and preserves the brain,” Young said.

Automated external defibrillators also are key to preventing heart attacks from being fatal, Swanberg said.

“We’re getting as many AEDs in the community as we can,” he said.

“Before we got there, they had an AED out and open and were trying to get it on.”

Allen, the brother of Jamestown S’Klallam Tribal Chairman Ron Allen and casino Chief Operating Officer Jerry Allen, said employees undergo first-aid training twice a year. The last one was two months ago.

Swanberg said he received an update on the victim’s condition Thursday morning.

“He’s actually awake and talking to his family,” Swanberg said. “He doesn’t remember the incident.”

Atlanta bartenders sues after being replaced by "hot chicks" www.privateofficer.com

ATLANTA, Ga. Dec 31 2011 -- One of the restaurants in the final round for a concession space at Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport is facing a lawsuit after a bartender says he was replaced by a plan to hire only "hot chicks".

On one side of this lawsuit is Tony Clark, a former bartender at Varasano's pizzeria, who declined an interview with 11Alive. His attorney Muna Claxton sat down with us instead.

"Tony is not about publicity," Claxton said. "That's why he's not here."

On the other side is the owner of Varasano's, Jeffery Varasano. Restaurant consultant Brett Holtzclaw is not named as a defended in the lawsuit, but he is implicated as the man behind the "hot chicks" plan.

"You almost have to prove you innocence rather than prove your guilt," Varasano said. "And we can. We have."

According to the lawsuit, Holtzclaw devised a plan to start hiring "hot chicks," then cut Clark's hours. Claxton told 11Alive News Clark overheard Holtzclaw use those exact words in his plan to bring in more customers to the Buckhead restaurant.

"I don't even know where he's going with that," Varasano said.

"There was never a strategy like that," Holtzclaw added.

When asked if she had evidence or witnesses to corroborate Clark's claims the "hot chicks" conversation ever took place, Claxton said, "Yes we do, and we believe as the lawsuit goes forward, that will come out."

Clark's complaint to EEOC was dismissed back in September. His lawsuit was filed this week in federal court.

Varasano says after months of nothing, there's more to the timing of the lawsuit. His restaurant has recently been in the spotlight as a finalist for a new concession at Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport.

Claxton said neither she nor her client knew about their recent attention.

As part of the EEOC investigation, Varasano's provided a break-down of their current staffing: they have 16 males and 17 females.

"This has never been an issue for us. That's why this is so ridiculous. We have people of all genders, sexual orientations, races. We just want them to work hard," Varasano said.

Claxton insists her client was a hard worker.

"He did not deserve to lose his job. I have letters from clients that said they missed seeing him there, that he did a good job," she said.

Varasano said Clark didn't work hard. He showed 11Alive an e-mail where the ex-bartender complained about working late hours, and another exchanged between managers discussing problems Clark was having training other bartenders. Both were dated before the alleged "hot chicks" conversation.

A letter from Claxton's law firm dated in January proposed a $100,000 settlement. But Varasano insists he has the evidence to prove the hot chicks lawsuit is going cold fast. It includes pages and pages of e-mails and Facebook conversations, including one between two former Varasano's employees, one of them Clark, asking, "Where's the money?? LOL."

"Tony just wants what's fair," Claxton said.

"This is ridiculous," Varasano replied.

With neither side budging, the case dubbed "the hot chicks" has been assigned to a federal judge.

Ellicott NY hires part time police to patrol local airport www.privateofficer.com

ELLICOTT NY Dec 31 2011  - Four part-time police officers have been hired to provide security for the airport.
Police Chief William Ohnmeiss Jr. was given approval at a recent Ellicott Town Board meeting to hire the officers, which, he said he has done.
Due to budgetary constraints, it was deemed more financially feasible for the town to take over security at the airport, a service once provided by the Chautauqua County Sheriff's Department.
Ohnmeiss said the four new hirees will spend eight to 12 weeks training. A meeting will be held with federal Transportation Security Administration and airport officials to go over what the detail the four are to provide will entail, although, he said, the officers will be visible as planes arrive and depart.
They will also provide security at checkpoints and be responsible for parking lot, runway and gate security.
He said there have been suspicious situations throughout the years at the airport they have been able to be handled without incident due to security being present.
Ohnmeiss said the four will also be cross-trained so they can work as Ellicott road officers, in courts and as needed to fill-in scheduling gaps, when others have time off or are sick.
He said there are other six part-time Ellicott police officers and nine full-timers, including administration.
The new officers will begin work at the airport Sunday.

Virginia hunting accident leaves man dead www.privateofficer.com

Chatham, VA Dec 31 2011 - Authorities say it was a freak accident: a man in Pittsylvania County shot dead by his neighbor. The man says he was hunting, and made a tragic mistake.

The two men were neighbors. Police say the hunter mistook the man for a deer while he was hunting Thursday afternoon. "A tragedy occurred Friday night at approximately 5:15," said Karl Martin, the District Supervisor for the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries.

Police say 62 year old Harry Hale was hunting. But when Hale pulled the trigger to make the kill, the target wasn't what he was aiming for. "The victim was shot with a high powered rifle. He was mistaken for, apparently mistaken for a deer," said Martin.

After firing the high powered rifle, Hale made his way down to the side of the road, where the victim, 57 year old Richie Pope, had fallen.

Realizing his mistake, Hale immediately called 9-1-1.

Police say Pope suffered a severe gunshot wound and later died. Hale was Pope's neighbor, and at 62 years old, apparently quite the experienced hunter.

Investigators don't know how he could have made such a grave mistake. "Most people that hunt do have a background with safety in mind. People make mistakes, but relatively few make one of this magnitude," said Martin.

Lester Bartee has been a hunting instructor for more than 15 years.

"When you raise your firearm and put it to your shoulder, and look down the barrel, that you are absolutely sure of your target before you pull the trigger," said Bartee. He says hunting accidents are extremely rare. But he says when hunters spend hours; waiting to kill an animal, their mind begins to wander. "And the first little movement that you see, this thing right here, and your eyes tell you, that's something to shoot at and you pull the trigger," said Bartee.

Though this seems to be just a tragic mistake, police are saying the shooter could be facing some serious charges. They wouldn't say if the victim was wearing bright colored clothes or not. But they made it crystal clear, that was not his fault, it's the hunter's responsibility to make sure he knows what he's shooting.

Intoxicated NYPD sergeant fights with Philidelphia transit security and police www.privateofficer.com

PHILADELPHIA, PA Dec 31 2011 An apparently drunk NYPD officer with a long history of citizen complaints was captured on YouTube getting forcibly escorted off a Greyhound bus in Philadelphia by police, officials said Thursday.

Sergeant Carlos Fabara was off duty at the time of the incident, and can be seen in the video refusing a security guard's instruction to step off the bus.

"Let's go! Let's go now!" a security guard yells at Fabara, as the seemingly amused officer refuses to budge.

Fabara, who earns nearly $100,000 annually, has 13 civilian complaints against him, which, according to reports, is the most against an NYPD cop.

As Fabara refused to move, passengers were forced to sit and wait for almost 30 minutes before a Philadelphia officer boarded the bus, cuffed the boozy NYPD officer and escorted him off the bus.

The incident is reportedly under investigation by the NYPD Internal Affairs Bureau.

Chicago police identified officer killed during robbery www.privateofficer.com

Chicago IL Dec 30 2011 An off-duty police officer was shot and killed Thursday night during a robbery at a convenience store in the Austin neighborhood where he worked as a security guard, officials said.

Two men walked into the M & M Quick Foods in the 1200 block of North Austin Boulevard about 8:30 p.m. and shot the officer, Clifton Lewis, several times with a "machine-type" pistol. They then grabbed his gun and star and fled, sources said.

Lewis, 41, an eight-year veteran assigned to the Austin District, was rushed to Stroger Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. About 200 police officers joined Lewis' family at the hospital into the night.

Darrell Davis, 22, who was in the store with a friend, said the shooter didn't say much and the officer didn't have time to react. “It happened so quickly,” Davis said.

Store owner Jaimini Patel said the store, which is equipped with security cameras, was robbed about three weeks ago.

“For so many years, nothing happened like this," she said. "Not like this, a shooting, somebody dying. Never happened. I don’t know what to say now."

James Bowman, 35, who lives nearby in Oak Park, said hiring a security guard "was supposed to stop the problem. But now it’s a bigger problem.”

Bowman said his friend was killed on the same block about 10 years ago. “Stuff like this, it’s normal here,” he said.

Another man, who asked not to be named, said he stopped by the store Wednesday after his son’s basketball game and spoke with the officer.

His son was dribbling the ball and the officer asked the man about his son’s game.

“Shocking, it’s shocking,” the man said about the shooting.

A woman who lives near the store was on her way to play the lottery when said she heard one shot and then saw police gather quickly.

Just before midnight, more than a dozen police cars were parked near Stroger with their Mars lights flashing, waiting for Clifton's body to be taken to the Cook County medical examiner's office a few blocks away.

NJ police team up to capture shoplifter-robbery suspect www.privateofficer.com

Millburn NJ Dec 30 2011 A suspected shoplifter and purse snatcher -- who fled police through downtown Millburn earlier this month -- was arrested Wednesday in a joint investigation between police in Millburn and Toms River.

Maurice Cohen, 51, of Northfield, NJ, faces multiple charges, including eluding police, theft, robbery, receiving stolen property, and shoplifting, police said.

Cohen is a suspect in a spree of thefts from stores and purse snatching -- one that ended with a senior citizen in Toms River being dragged by the car in a grocery parking lot-- in both Essex and Ocean counties, police said. In Millburn, he allegedly fled down a one-way street in a stolen car when police tried to stop him for shoplifting. The car was later recovered near Cohen’s home in Northfield.

“This arrest was based on great investigative performance and solid teamwork,” said Michael Palardy, Millburn’s acting captain, in a press release sent to the media on Thursday afternoon.

According to Millburn police, the crime spree began on Dec. 14 at Nordstorm’s when Cohen grabbed four leather jackets valued at $1,544 and ran from the store around 2 p.m.

Nordstrom’s security was able to provide Millburn police with both a description of the suspect and vehicle, a burgundy Toyota Tercel. About 20 minutes later, in downtown Millburn, Officer Glenn Ostlund attempted to stop what was believed to be the getaway car at the corner of Millburn Avenue and Lackawanna Place.

The driver made a U-turn and drove off at a high rate of speed and went down Millburn Avenue in the wrong direction towards Main Street, according to police reports that day. Directing traffic on a normal traffic post was Officer Collin McMillan.

McMillan, realizing the dangers to the pedestrians, cleared the intersection, drew his gun and pointed at the renegade driver, police said. The driver aimed his vehicle directly toward McMillan and at the last second veered off onto Main Street southbound.

Officers did not pursue the vehicle and the suspect left the area, according to the information released on Thursday.

Later that evening, police say Cohen returned to The Mall at Short Hills, where he allegedly tried to snatch a woman’s purse. The victim reported she was walking to her vehicle about 8 p.m. when a red-and-orange sedan came towards her and a man reached out and grabbed her purse. The two had a brief struggle and the suspect left without the purse. Nordstrom’s security cameras were able to confirm that the suspect vehicle was the same vehicle that was used in the earlier shoplifting incident, according to the Millburn police press release.

Five days later, on Dec. 19, a second report of a purse snatching at The Mall at Short Hills around 7:50 p.m. matched the description of the suspect, police said.

Also on Dec. 19, police said Cohen snatched a purse outside a Stop & Shop in Toms River – where a 71-year-old woman was dragged by the suspect’s vehicle in the process.

On Wednesday, Dec. 28, the Millburn Police Department along with Atlantic County Emergency Response Team members, Northfield Police Department, Toms River Police Department, and the FBI Safe Streets Taskforce executed a warrant for the arrest of Cohen, who lives in the 500 block of Pincus Avenue, Northfield, police said.

Following the arrest, a search warrant was executed at his residence. Police recovered a number of items that fit the description of items stolen from victims at the Mall at Short Hills and were retained as evidence, Millburn police said in the press release.

Cohen was turned over to Toms River Police Department for processing and additional charging. Further investigation and criminal charges are pending. He is being held at the Ocean County Jail pending $320,000.00 bail, police said.

A security guard from an apartment complex in the 500 block of Capitol Village Circle called police at about 2:45 a.m. to report that a resident had become confrontational when approached about the loud music he was playing, police Officer Jose Garcia said.

At that point, Garcia said, the K-9 officer released a police dog on the suspect, allowing officers to take him into custody.

The suspect was injured by the dog and has been taken to a hospital for treatment. Garcia said police will release his name once he has been booked into jail.

Men charged with assaulting nightclub security www.privateofficer.com

Lake Arrowhead, CA Dec 30 2011 Sheriff’s deputies arrested Jacob Bryan Rosendahl, 23, and Thomas Alexander Garcia, 23, both of Crestline, after they allegedly assaulted and threatened security officers at the Arrowhead Bar in the Lake Arrowhead Village.
In a statement to The Alpenhorn News, Lieutenant Rick Ells of the Twin Peaks Sheriff’s Station said that Rosendahl and Garcia had been at the Arrowhead Bar late Friday night and early Saturday morning when, for unspecified reasons, they both were evicted from the bar by one of the bar’s security officers.

Ells said he did not immediately know if the two were removed from the bar for excessive drinking or causing a disturbance, but were escorted out of the property by one of the ‘bouncers.’
Ells said the pair apparently waited around the bar to ambush one of the bouncers as they were leaving the bar.
Ells said one of the officers, he did not know if it was the same one that removed them from the bar, was attacked by the two as he left the building.
Ells said the two ganged up on the security officer, knocking him to the ground where it was alleged that Rosendahl started kicking the officer in the head and jaw.
The other security officers from the bar saw the assault and rushed out and detained Rosendahl and Garcia until the sheriff’s deputies arrived.
While waiting for the deputies, Garcia is alleged to have told the security officers, “When I get out of jail, I’m going to come back and kill you.”
At the time of his arrest, Garcia had what was described as a “clear plastic baggie containing Norco pills.” (A prescription pain medication for which he was not the person the pills were prescribed to.)
Ells said the security guard/bouncer received only minor injuries to his face and jaw and was treated and released at the scene by Lake Arrowhead Fire paramedics.
Rosendahl was arrested for violation of California Penal Code (PC) Section 245(a) (1), (assault with a deadly weapon, not a firearm) and booked at the Central Detention Center in San Bernardino. Bail was set at $50,000 dollars.
Garcia was arrested for violation of California Health and Safety (H&S) Code Section 11350, (possession of a controlled substance) and PC 422, (criminal threats) and booked at the Central Detention Center in San Bernardino. Bail was set at $50,000 dollars.

CENTRAL ISLIP, N.Y. Dec 29 2011  AP — New evidence has led to the arrest of an accused co-conspirator in the 1994 killing of an armored car guard during a botched robbery on Long Island.

Newsday reports that federal prosecutors say Scott Mulligan of Florida has been linked to the killing of armored car guard Julius Baumgardt.

A 42-year-old Long Island gym owner was convicted last May of murdering the guard during the 1994 heist in Muttontown.

Tulsa arson investigation leads to serial shoplifter arrest www.privateofficer.com

Tulsa OK Dec 29 2011 A convicted serial shoplifter has been busted again and this time with thousands of dollars in stolen items.

Investigators say it’s all connected to an arson fire that happened Tuesday morning around 3:00 a.m. in the 6800 block of E. 83rd Street.

Last week police busted a trio of suspected shoplifters and found thousands of dollars in stolen stuff in that home.

Shannon Porter, 26, also known to go by Shannon Phillips, Shanterrious Phillips, 28, and Kejuan Barnette, were arrested on December 22nd after police served a search warrant on two separate buildings

Police say these suspected shoplifters are organized costing millions of shoppers and stores every year.

Tulsa Police detectives in the Riverside Division are in their third of four weeks in a temporary Organized Retail Crime Task Force.

During the task force convicted thief Shannon Porter is accused of swiping a $36,000 ring from Sam’s Club and a $100,000 in stolen stuff.

Detectives say Porter is no stranger to retail crime.

"It was our understanding certain retailers saw her boosting almost immediately after getting out of DOC,” says Detective Lori Visser.

So employees alerted police.

"This is a way of life for these particular people,” says Visser.

Police say she and her crew along with three dozen other serial shoplifters are known as “boosters” and are making a thousand dollars a day.

Some are known to steal to support a drug addiction.

Thieves are caught on surveillance cameras pocketing items. Some are seen stealing cart loads of household items such as Tide detergent, cases of Five-hour Energy and electronics.

Police say they’ll sell them on the street, flea markets or online.

"They'll do whatever they can do get away to keep from going to jail,” says Visser.

Some shoplifters are escalating to violence and when clerks confront them some thieves are pulling knives and guns and punching the clerks.

"I never thought as an average consumer. I never thought about going into a store and seeing someone do that. I think I will keep an eye out and check it out,” says shopper Adam Barzellone.

Police say these shoplifters are bigger than petit larcenies. They are costing Tulsa shoppers $25 million to $35 million in sales tax revenues.

"It makes me angry to tell you the truth,” says shopper Crystal Kames.

The task force has learned a few of their tricks.

"Often times they'll park in handicap spaces. Where it is a quick getaway,” says Visser.

Police also say to get past security sensor boosters will use bags lined with foil or they’ll line the bags with foil themselves.

Detectives say they often work in pairs where one will distract a clerk while the other loads up on loot.

"We are trying our best to make a living and with people like that you can't make hardly a living,” says shopper Karen Rhodes.

Detectives are working with the FBI as well. Investigators say the boosters will travel to Texas, Arkansas, Missouri and Kansas to steal items from stores.

If you suspect someone is stealing inside a store, police recommend that you do not confront them but report them to security.

The retailers involved in the task force and contacted for this story did not want to comment.

TPD’s task force is temporary but they hope by to create permanent Organized Retail Crime Unit like the one in the Dallas Police Department.

An alert neighbor captured a picture on a cell phone of the suspect vehicle involved in the arson.

Fire investigators are looking for four to five men wearing hoodies riding in a dark colored or black four-door Cadillac.

They believe it has been seen in the neighborhood where the arson happened near 83rd and Sheridan.

If you have any information call the Arson line at (918) 596-ARSN. Remember you do not have give your name and the Crime Commission pays a reward if the tip leads to a conviction.

High-ranking Miami-Dade County police officer suspected of misappropriating nearly $23,000 www.privateofficer.com

MIAMI Fla Dec 29 2011 -- A high-ranking Miami-Dade County police officer is suspected of misappropriating nearly $23,000 by using it to bankroll his unofficial department flag football team, court records show.

The money, paid by the Miami Dolphins, was actually intended to cover the cost of security at Sun Life Stadium.

Tyrone White, a former major busted down to captain, is now under criminal investigation for grand theft but has not been charged as detectives pore over his finances.

White denies any wrongdoing, saying he believed the money was a legitimate charitable donation to his athletics organization.

In October, the department announced White's demotion to captain and that he and another officer had been relieved of duty with pay. The police agency declined to discuss reasons for the demotion, but a search warrant recently filed in Miami-Dade circuit court details what prompted the move:

White, then a major over the warrants bureau, for years has run a flag football team and other sports teams comprised of members of the police department. They compete in charity competitions, such as the Police Olympics, staged throughout Florida.

In March, White hosted the second-annual "Miami-Dade Police and Fire Fallen Heroes Flag Football Tournament," which benefited the families of slain officers.

The Miami-Dade Police Department "is not affiliated nor participates as an organization with said event or team," according to the warrant, noting that employees take part on their own time and are not paid by the agency for their efforts.

Internal affairs detectives began looking at the organization's finances when the department's fiscal administration bureau was seeking payment from the Dolphins and SunLife Stadium for "services rendered" in early 2010. The team contracts with Miami-Dade police for off-duty security service at games and other events.

When the stadium staff reviewed their finances, they realized that in February and March 2010, two checks totaling $22,734.23 had been "mistakenly" made out to "Miami-Dade Police Department Football Coach: Tyrone White."

A stadium staffer told Miami-Dade detectives that the checks "should have been endorsed to Miami-Dade Police Department Fiscal Administration Bureau."

A spokesman for the team declined to comment Wednesday.

White, according to defense attorney Michael Band, had earlier solicited a charitable donation from the Dolphins to help defray the costs of uniforms, sports equipment and lodging for the team, which plays to benefit charitable groups.

When he received the checks, White believed the team had fulfilled his request, Band said.

"We believe that Maj. White acted in good faith, and received money he requested of the Dolphins for a legitimate purpose - promoting the police department in the Police Olympics. We believe that at the conclusion of the investigation, charges will not be filed and he should be restored to his lofty position of police major."

White, records show, deposited the two checks into an account he controlled at the Dade County Financial Credit Union. The account was set up to manage the charity team's finances.

With assistance from prosecutors, detectives subpoenaed the bank records and obtained surveillance footage of White and another officer, Kiriakos Beruty, conducting "several transactions."

Beruty - then a narcotics detectives - was also relieved of duty, although his role remains unclear and his name is mentioned only briefly in the search warrant. His defense attorney, Carl Kafka, said his client is eager to cooperate with investigators.

"Beruty was surprised he was included in all this because he's done nothing wrong," Kafka said.

After the stadium money was deposited, White - using money from the account - leased a three-bedroom, two-bath townhouse for the team's stay during the Police Olympics in Port St. Lucie, paying a $250 security deposit to the home's owner, records show.

After the event, the owner returned the security deposit, minus a $120 cleaning fee, which White put into his personal banking account, the warrant said.

Later, in May of this year, White rented another townhouse in Port St. Lucie. When the $300 security deposit was returned to him, he put the money into the bank account of his mother, records show.

White, an officer since 1983, and Beruty remain on leave of their police duties with pay, according to the department.

"The case continues to be an open and active (internal affairs) investigation," a Miami-Dade police spokesman said. "Therefore, no information can be released until the case is closed; there is no time-line at this point as to when the case will be completed."
