Reno gambler arrested with child porn at casino www.privateofficer.com

Reno NV Nov 30 2011 A 54-year-old Reno gambler was arrested after he accidentally left behind a laptop in a downtown casino that was filled with images of child pornography.
Jeff R. Stewart on Monday was being held in the Washoe County Jail in lieu of $100,000 cash bail on nine counts of possession of child pornography.

Reno police said they are continuing to investigate and more charges could be forthcoming.

A guest at the Eldorado Hotel and Casino on Saturday afternoon had alerted security that someone had left a laptop — hanging in a shoulder case — on the back of a chair in front of a slot machine, according to a police report.

While security looked at computer files on the laptop to determine the identity of the owner, they saw images of children, around 10 years old, engaged in sexual behavior, the report said.

Soon after Reno police arrived, Stewart reported to casino security he had accidentally left behind his laptop. He said he had been gambling, and then left it in a case hanging on the back of a chair. Stewart described it to authorities, and then showed officers pictures of himself that were on the laptop, the report said.
After officers confronted him with the images of child pornography, authorities said he told them they were his, and he knew it was illegal.

North Carolina police chief resigns suddenly www.privateofficer.com

RAEFORD, N.C. Nov 30 2011 Authorities in a small North Carolina town has again suddenly lost their police chief.
Raeford Police Chief Duncan Edward Jaggers resigned suddenly Monday and it may be connected to a lawsuit that has been filed against him for excessive force. Mayor John McNeill would not say why the chief resigned.

Jaggers said his resignation was not prompted by a federal lawsuit accusing him and other officers with using excessive force while he was a law officer in the Harnett County town of Coats.

The girlfriend of one of Jaggers' predecessors as police chief was shot to death last summer. The State Bureau of Investigation is investigating whether her death in the Raeford home she shared with Kevin Locklear was a suicide or homicide.

Locklear had been fired as Raeford's chief in 2007 after charges he assaulted his estranged wife.

Trial for man accused in murder of security officer delayed www.privateofficer.com

Independence, MO Nov 30 2011 — The trial of a man charged with the death of an Independence security guard 13 years ago was delayed Monday for unspecified reasons.

Jeffrey S. Sauerbry, 39, was charged in 2009 with the first-degree murder of William Kellett, who was found dead in a shed connected to a used car dealership in the 600 block East U.S. 24 on July 4, 1998. He reportedly had been shot and stabbed several times.

Sauerbry was a person of interest in the December 2004 disappearance of Summer Shipp, who was doing door-to-door surveys. Sauerbry lived in the area where Shipp was last seen. Her body was found in the Little Blue River.

Prosecutors have said that the Kellett murder case is not related to the Shipp murder case, which is still open and unsolved.

A private investigator in the Shipp disappearance told The Examiner in 2009 that his investigation showed that Sauerbry lived in the neighborhood in which Shipp disappeared. Some witnesses even recalled Shipp going up to the door of Sauerbry’s home. There was never enough evidence, however, to charge Sauerbry with the crime.

Former Virginia State Police captain pleads guilty to aggravated sexual battery www.privateofficer.com

LAWRENCEVILLE, Va. Nov 30 2011 Former Virginia State Police captain Edward L. Hope Jr., facing sexual-abuse charges involving a juvenile girl eight years ago, pleaded guilty to a lesser charge and was given a suspended sentence in Brunswick County Circuit Court this morning.

Hope, 55, pleaded guilty to a single count of aggravated sexual battery. Circuit Court Judge Alan Sharrett sentenced him to 20 years in prison, with all of it suspended. He will have to register with the state's sexual offender registry. Several of the victim's family members wept when Hope admitted his guilt.

Hope declined an opportunity to comment during the sentencing and never looked at the victim, a Chesterfield County girl now 15 years old, sitting in the second row of the courtroom. He left through a back door of the courthouse.

Hope had been charged with two counts of aggravated sexual battery, two counts of rape and one count of forcible sodomy, and faced multiple life terms.

A trial in May was postponed when the victim said she could not remember the incidents.

Hope went on trial in 2010 in Chesterfield County on multiple charges of rape, sexual penetration and forcible sodomy. A mistrial was declared because of juror misconduct, and Chesterfield authorities said then that they do not intend to re-try the case because of the difficulty doing so would place on the girl.

Hope was simultaneously indicted in Brunswick because of alleged acts that took place there in a hunting cabin between November and December 2003.

Coral Gables High student gets 40 yrs prison term for fatally stabbing classmate www.privateofficer.com

Miami Fla Nov 30 2011 For fatally stabbing a classmate at Coral Gables High, Andy Rodriguez must serve a 40-year term in prison, plus 10 years of probation, a judge ruled Tuesday.

“This is an enormous and senseless tragedy. Two families are forever torn apart and changed,” Miami-Dade Circuit Dava Tunis said.

A jury in August convicted Rodriguez, 19, of second-degree murder with a weapon for the September 2009 slaying of Juan Carlos Rivera, 17.

The two got into a brawl after bumping into each other in the hallway. Rodriguez, armed with a knife, stabbed Rivera five times, with one a fatal blow to the heart.

Rodriguez, prosecutors said, was upset that his girlfriend had befriended Rivera, a new arrival to the high school. His defense attorney claimed that Rodriguez was acting in self-defense after Rivera

$2.1 million award in park ranger’s fatal shooting of Ramapough Indian www.privateofficer.com

Hackensack NJ Nov 30 2011 A jury in Hackensack awarded more than $2.1 million on Monday to the family of a Ramapough Indian who was fatally shot in Mahwah during a confrontation with a park ranger five years ago.

“We are so relieved for the family,” said Nick Brustin, the attorney who represented Emil Mann’s family in the trial. “I hope this gives them some sense of peace and closure.”

Mann’s three sons and other tribal members broke into tears and hugged each other after the verdict was read. They declined to comment afterward.

Brustin told the jury during the trial that state park Police Officer Chad Walder, who has since retired, used unnecessary force when he drew his gun and shot the unarmed Mann near Stag Hill on April 1, 2006.

Mann and other tribe members had gathered for a barbecue in the woods that day. Walder was one of three officers who were on patrol and came face to face with some tribal members who were riding ATVs, which is illegal in state parks.

Testimony during the trial showed that Walder’s colleague, Lt. Kelly Gottheiner, was attacked by another tribal member while she tried to arrest him for illegal ATV riding and disregarding her orders to stop.

Walder said he was rushing to Gottheiner’s aid when an enraged Mann came out of the woods, screaming and cursing at him.

Walder said he told Mann to stop, but Mann kept coming and engaged him in a scuffle. He said he shot Mann because he lunged at him and tried to grab his gun while other tribal members were circling him in an attempt to ambush him.

Brustin said Walder made up that story to justify an unjustified shooting.

Mann, who was shot twice, died in the hospital nine days later. The shooting provoked such tension between law enforcement and the Ramapough members that top state officials, including then-Gov. Jon Corzine, got involved.

After a nearly year-long investigation, a Bergen County grand jury indicted Walder on reckless manslaughter charges. He was acquitted after a criminal trial two years ago in Superior Court in Hackensack.

Jurors in the civil trial, however, deliberated for less than two hours on Monday before they returned with a verdict, awarding $2,172,274 in compensatory damages to Mann’s family.

The panel will return Tuesday to deliberate whether punitive damages should be awarded.

Walder is the only defendant in the case, but the state's Tort Claims Act would allow Mann's family to collect the judgment from the state, which was Walder’s employer at the time.

Walder’s attorney, William Finizio, declined to comment.

TN police rescues child being injured by man at hospital www.privateofficer.com

Murfreesboro TN Nov 30 2011 A pair of Murfreesboro police officers rescued a baby boy Monday when a man wrapped his hands around the infant’s head and began to “twist as if to break the baby’s neck,” according to an arrest report.

Glenn Allen Climer Jr., 35, of Murfreesboro, faces charges of child abuse, resisting arrest and assault on an officer.

Middle Tennessee Medical Center security officers called police just before 2 p.m., requesting assistance with Climer, who was found with his infant son in the backseat of a sport-utility vehicle. Police asked Climer to take the child into the emergency room so doctors could look at a bruise under the baby’s left eye.

Climer, listed at 6 feet and 200 pounds, began to assault the child, police reported, and a scuffle led to his arrest.
“It did not quite reach the point where the baby was seriously injured from the act, however it was very close and the child did sustain injury,” said police spokesman Kyle Evans.

Panther Creek Consolidated Independent School District employee charged in $200,000 theft www.privateofficer.com

VALERA, Texas Nov 30 2011 -- A former Panther Creek Consolidated Independent School District employee has been arrested for theft.

According to the Coleman County Sheriff’s Office, Lori Sparks allegedly stole more than $200,000 from the school district.

Sparks was the business manager at the district. District administrators said Sparks worked for Panther Creek for five years.

In a statement, Superintendent Dwin Nanny said:

“Panther Creek ISD has learned that a former district employee may have engaged in financial criminal wrong-doing. That employee is no longer with the district, and the matter was turned over to law enforcement. The district has learned that this former employee was recently indicted by a grand jury. Because this is an ongoing criminal matter, the district will allow the judicial process to take its course and will not further comment on the matter. While Panther Creek ISD is fully cooperating with law enforcement, we will continue to keep as our priority providing the best possible educational programs and services to our students. As always, we thank the community for its support.”

Nanny later told KTXS on camera that they were notified by auditors of some possible criminal financial wrong-doing, so they turned the issue over to authorities.

This news has left many Panther Creek parents shocked. One lady, who did not want to be identified, said “it is a shame that it happened in such a small district.”

Jennifer Short has taught at the high school for four years.

“It’s a real unfortunate incident. I hate that it’s happened in the district. It really makes me sad for the tax payers and especially the students,” Short told KTXS.

She said it is hard hearing the news since she is not only a teacher, but also a parent and a tax payer.

“It just really makes me sad that it happened,” Short said.

The superintendent also told KTXS they are still recovering from losing $90,000 in state funding and now the loss of $200,000 will hurt the district even more.

“We’ve really been hit hard with all the cuts in the legislature already and to think about this happening it’s been hard,” Short explained.

Sparks was arrested on school grounds on November 18th. She is currently out of jail on a $15,000 bond.

WV Walmart employee nabbed in theft scheme www.privateofficer.com

MOUNDSVILLE WV Nov 30 2011 - A 22-year-old Walmart employee faces embezzlement charges after he allegedly assisted in stealing items from the store during a two-week span.

Robert Wayne Wise, 22, of Moundsville was arrested earlier this month and charged with six counts of embezzlement and one count of fraudulent schemes. According to the criminal complaint, the Moundsville Police Department was notified in September of the thefts by a Walmart asset protection manager.

That manager told police that Wise and two others allegedly stole a number of items from the store with Wise using his position as an employee to aid the theft. The criminal complaint states the two males, identified as Jerry Lucas and Robert Harmon, would gather items from throughout the store and take them to Wise's register. Wise would then "under-ring" the items.

"That means he wouldn't actually scan them but would put them in a bag," the complaint states, adding Wise also removed any security devices from items.

Wise was taken to the Moundsville Police Department for questioning. Lucas was also interviewed and produced two items stolen from the store. Investigators also reviewed surveillance footage from Walmart, which allegedly shows Lucas and Harmon putting items in a cart before checking out at Wise's register.

Wise and Lucas both allegedly confirmed their involvement in the incident, while Harmon was not questioned by police.

The complaint states the total value of merchandise taken in these incidents is $1,646.32. Wise was arraigned by Marshall County Magistrate William Anderson and posted $2,500 bond. A preliminary hearing date is set for Friday. Harmon and Lucas may also face grand larceny charges for their involvement in the case.

Peninsula High School dance teacher charged with sex crimes www.privateofficer.com

ROLLING HILLS ESTATES, Calif. Nov 30 2011 -- A dance teacher at Peninsula High School has been arrested for allegedly having a sexual relationship with a female student.

36-year-old Anthony Angellano, of Wilmington, was arrested on Monday.

He faces five counts of oral copulation with a minor and one count of digital penetration with a minor.

The alleged sexual relationship happened in 2006 and 2007, when the girl was 16 and 17 years old, and Angellano was 31.

Police say the girl was a student at Peninsula High at the time, but the alleged sexual encounters occurred at Angellano's Wilmington home.

The case is being handled by the Los Angeles Police Department, because Wilmington falls within its jurisdiction.

Angellano is also suspected of having sex with another female student 11 years ago, but charges were not filed in that case, because the statute of limitations has expired.

The Palos Verdes Unified School District was notified about the investigation back in October, and it immediately removed Angellano form his job.

He is currently on paid administrative leave, but his pay will be suspended once he is arraigned, according to district president Bill Franchini.

Angellano has worked for the school district for more than a decade as a contract employee.

According to the Peninsula High School website, Angellano helped establish a class called "Co-ed Choreo" in 1997, which teaches hip-hop, funk and jazz dancing.

He was hired as an "intern teacher" this year, while concurrently enrolled in a program at Cal State University, Dominguez Hills to work on his teaching credential.

Angellano has also taught dance at the Torrance Cultural Arts Center and the San Pedro Ballet Company.

Police suspect there may be additional victims, and are asking anyone with information to come forward.

Angellano is being held on $350,000 bail.

Topeka Kansas Walmart robbed of $200,000 www.privateofficer.com

Topeaka KS Nov 30 2011 A stocky white man with a shaved head, who wore glasses and a Carhartt jacket, breached store security early Saturday to steal at least $200,000 from Walmart, 1301 S.W. 37th, Topeka police said Monday.

As of Monday, no one has been arrested in the aggravated burglary of the store and theft of between $200,000 and $500,000.

"It's an ongoing investigation," Capt. Jerry Stanley said on Monday. Stanley is assistant division commander of the criminal investigation division.

Detectives "have leads they're following up on at this time," he said.

The theft occurred during a six-minute time frame starting at 3:21 a.m. Saturday just hours after the Black Friday sales.

The thief entered the manager's office, where the day's receipts "were accessible and walked off with those receipts," Stanley said.

Stanley said store security video tape captured the thief walking into the office and walking out. As of Monday, police hadn't released photographs taken by the security tape. The theft hasn't been traced to an employee, he said.

No employee or customer was threatened or confronted by the thief, Stanley said. Besides the theft, the crime also is an aggravated burglary because other people were inside the store.

Kansas law defines an aggravated burglary as entering an occupied structure with the intent to commit a felony. Aggravated burglary is a felony.

Store security procedures were breached in order for the thief to get behind certain doors to gain access to the cash, Stanley said. Stanley declined to elaborate about specific store security measures.

Stanley said it is "very" rare for a loss that big from a Topeka business, doubting that it had ever happened before.

"We're concerned when anything of this nature happens," Dianna Gee, spokeswoman at the Wal-Mart Stores Inc. home office in Bentonville, Ark., said Monday night.

The company is working closely with Topeka police and has supplied the surveillance tape to officers, Gee said. The company will consider offering a reward to aid in the apprehension of the thief, she said.

In Topeka, a man in the management area of the store on S.W. 37th declined to comment about Saturday’s incident.

Convicted habitual shoplifter pepper sprays bystander trying to detain him www.privateofficer.com

NORTH ATTLEBORO MA Nov 30 2011 - A Rhode Island man, described in court as a convicted habitual shoplifter, allegedly sprayed Mace at a bystander who attempted to stop him from fleeing a store at Emerald Square mall during a busy holiday shopping weekend.

The suspect, Russell C. Alves, 45, of Providence, was eventually apprehended by police in the parking lot in the Saturday night incident and was ordered held in jail on $7,500 cash bail after arraignment Monday in Attleboro District Court.

The 25-year-old bystander, who ran after the suspect with a store clerk, was not injured in the 8:30 p.m. incident, police said.

Police recovered more than $1,000 in clothing from the Victoria's Secret and American Eagle stores and arrested an alleged accomplice, Florence E. Pompey, 26, of Providence. Pompey is accused of helping steal from clothing stores and driving the getaway car, police said.

The pair allegedly used "booster bags," shopping bags designed to foil security systems, to steal the clothing until a store clerk at Victoria's Secret discovered them and chased Alves out of the mall, police said. A bystander saw the chase and heard the clerk yell for the man to stop and decided to help. Alves stopped to confront the man outside the mall, authorities said.

"As he was fleeing the mall, he was chased by a private citizen," Assistant District Attorney Mark Donovan said during a bail hearing. "He actually sprayed this person with chemical Mace and took a swing at him."

After the alleged spraying, the alleged shoplifter ran and threw a bag filled with stolen merchandise into a car allegedly driven by Pompey and continued running, police said.

Alves, who authorities say has served jail time in Rhode Island for being a habitual shoplifter, was apprehended by Patrolman Gary Maitland. Pompey was stopped and arrested after an investigation by Maitland, Patrolman Josh McMahon and Sgt. Bart Folan.

Alves pleaded innocent to a dozen charges, including larceny, using Mace in the commission of a crime, assault and battery by means of a dangerous weapon: Mace, unlawful possession of Mace, larceny and receiving stolen property.

He is also wanted on a warrant from Hingham District Court on an unrelated probation matter and is facing a pending larceny case in Taunton District Court, Donovan said. Pompey, who is free on $1,000 cash bail, pleaded innocent to five charges, including larceny, receiving stolen property and conspiracy.

Both were ordered to stay away from Emerald Square mall and are due back in Attleboro District Court for a pretrial hearing Dec. 16

Shoppers, mall security chase down purse snatcher www.privateofficer.com

MANCHESTER NH Nov 30 2011 - A purse-snatching at the Mall of New Hampshire was thwarted Monday night when a crowd of Sears' employees, mall security staff and shoppers chased the thief into the parking lot and held him until police arrived.

The accused thief, Trevor Drew, 21, of 314 Dubuque St., didn't submit quietly. As the crowd moved in and encircled him, Drew grabbed a wooden stake and allegedly swung it, hitting Robert Barberian, 35, of New Boston, in the head with it.

Barberian's glasses were scratched in the incident and he suffered bruises to his eye, according to police.

The incident began just before 7 p.m. when a woman shopping at Sears screamed out, "My purse. My purse." She had put it down on the floor while looking through clothing racks, felt a bump and looked up to see Drew running off with her purse, police said.

Barberian, who was shopping in the store, took off after the fleeing purse-snatcher after hearing the woman's screams as did Sears' employees and Mall of New Hampshire security.

The group chased the purse-snatcher into the parking lot where initially a Sears employee caught up to him. He grabbed onto the purse but Drew snatched it back and hit him in the head with it, police said.

The two tussled over the bag and the employee, who was not injured, managed to take the purse back and later return it to its owner, police said.

Barberian was the next to come in contact with Drew who police said was running around in circles in the lot as the crowd began closing in on him from all directions. Cornered, Drew grabbed a wooden stake and hit Barberian in the head with it, Tessier said.

A mall security officer blocked the stake when Drew swung it at him as well, she said, resulting in only a glancing blow to his head.

A second Sears employee then moved in and grabbed the stake from Drew while the security officer tackled him to the ground, detaining him with the help of other security officers despite Drew's continued attempts to escape.

Drew is charged with robbery, two counts of simple assault and criminal mischief.

Man caught fleeing Publix store with shopping cart full of food www.privateofficer.com

Boca Raton Fla Nov 30 2011 The loot would have made an extravagant Thanksgiving feast.

A 63-year-old Boca Raton man was arrested the day before Thanksgiving as he tried to make off with a bounty of stolen steak, lobster, champagne and shrimp from a Publix supermarket, Boca Raton police said.

Allen Lay tried to sneak out of the store at 1001 S. Federal Highway with the basket of groceries worth $424, a Boca Raton police arrest report said.

A store employee saw Lay as he strolled out of the store around 3 p.m. during the busy shopping day, police said. When officers arrived, he said he thought his girlfriend had paid for the items.

Surveillance video showed that Lay was alone in the store, police said.

He was arrested on a charge of grand theft and was booked at the Palm Beach County Jail. He was released two days later on a $5,000 bond.

At least five other people have been arrested in recent months for shoplifting at the same supermarket. The store's security guard watches for those who slip past the cashiers without paying.

On Sept. 3, Gary Jacobson wheeled a shopping cart packed with 42 beers, a carton of eggs and frozen peas, the arrest report said. The store security guard saw him leave with the $62 in groceries and called police.

Jacobson, 57, of Boynton Beach, was arrested on a charge of petty theft.

Days later, on Sept. 15, the same guard saw a man help himself to a Natural Ice beer and a roast beef sandwich without paying. Larry Slaterline, 53, told police he was hungry and didn't have money for the $6.38 meal.

The officer searched Slaterline and found "more than enough" money on him to cover the cost, according to police. He was charged with retail theft and failing to appear in court in an unrelated case.

Two other men were arrested that month in similar cases, city records show.

Foley MN city council agrees to hire private security to patrol city streets www.privateofficer.com

Foley Minn.Nov 30 2011 — The city council in Foley, Minn. voted Monday to hire private security guards to patrol city streets next year, ending a lengthy debate that had attracted the attention of Attorney General Lori Swanson.

Officials in the central Minnesota city said the change will save $53,000 a year and was necessary to cope with state cutbacks in funding to local governments. The city of 2,600 saw its local government aid payments cut by more than $150,000 this year.

"Cities are going to look at all kinds of alternative things now," Mayor Gary Gruba said Tuesday. "I think they have to. I mean the state has cut back on (Local Government Aid), and smaller towns, as well as larger cities, are feeling the effect."

Under the agreement reached Monday, city streets will be patrolled by employees of General Security Services Corporation starting Jan. 1. The Benton County Sheriff's Office will continue to respond to 911 calls and other requests for law enforcement assistance.

Earlier this year, the city council voted unanimously to hire a private security firm, but city officials agreed to suspend that plan after Swanson urged the council to reconsider.

The Benton County Sheriff's Office did not immediately return a call seeking comment Tuesday evening.

Alabama-Tennessee lawmen shot-suspect captured after manhunt www.privateofficer.com

LINCOLN COUNTY, Tenn.Nov 29 2011 – A man wanted for shooting two law enforcement officers in Alabama and Tennessee was taken into custody early Tuesday morning.

The suspect, Joseph Scott Shriver, 23, was caught just before 4 a.m. when officers spotted his car in a field about two hours after the second shooting. The car had allegedly left the roadway at a high rate of speed. Officers surrounded the car, and Shriver was taken into custody without incident.

"We're pretty durn good at getting the bad guy," said Madison County Sheriff Blake Dorning.

Two weapons were recovered, including a handgun and an assault type rifle with multiple rounds.

"This individual was on a mission," Dorning added.

It all started in Madison County, Alabama around 11:30 p.m. Monday when the Super Stop on Moores Milll Road was robbed.

About 15 minutes later, a Madison County sheriff's deputy spotted a vehicle that matched the description from the robbery and pulled it over.

Sheriff Dorning said the man got out of his car, and fired several rounds at the deputy from an assault rifle. Deputy Brent Beavers was hit in the face, and taken to the hospital. He underwent surgery and is in critical condition.

The suspect fled north.

Within an hour of the first shooting, officials said 60 to 70 law enforcement officers were spread out over Madison County, Alabama and southern Tennessee in the search for Shriver.

He was spotted about an hour later by a Fayetteville Police officer on Highway 110 and Ardmore Highway. He also pulled over the vehicle, and the man got out and fired several rounds into the patrol car.

Officer Justin Raby was hit in the shoulder by bullet, but he was not badly hurt. He was taken to the hospital, where he was treated and released.

A Lincoln County Deputy showed up on the scene during the shooting, and authorities are investigating whether he was able to return fire.

Fayetteville Police Officers said they recovered more than a dozen shell casings at the scene of the shooting.

Authorities said they do not believe anyone else was involved.

Shriver was taken to the hospital to be checked out, and later brought to the Lincoln County Jail.

He was charged with two counts of attempted murder, evading arrest, vandalism, and possesion of a firearm. Authorities said Shriver is from El Paso, Texas and had been discharged from the Army last spring.

Deputy Beavers had been with the Madison County Sheriff's Department for two and a half years. Officer Raby had been with the Fayetteville Police Department for two years.

The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation was called in to investigate.

Veteran San Jose police sergeant kills wife, commits suicide www.privateofficer.com

Gilroy CA Nov 29 2011 On Sunday evening, Chris Shimek told his teenage boys to go grab something to eat. He wanted to talk to their mother alone.

When they returned from an In-N-Out Burger, their father, a veteran San Jose police sergeant, was dead from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound. Their mother, Lynn, was dead, too, apparently strangled by her husband. Their parents were found by police officers in a master bedroom, sources close to the investigation said, with his hand in hers.

The grisly deaths that police are investigating as a murder-suicide at the couple's home in Gilroy came suddenly, as their marriage was reportedly ending. But some friends said it came after years of possessive behavior by Shimek toward his wife of 15 years.

"She wanted out," said Rhonda Harkins, a friend of Lynn Shimek's. "She told him she wanted a divorce about three weeks ago. He was not happy. She didn't deserve this. I never thought he would hurt her."

The apparent murder-suicide left the San Jose Police Department, already demoralized from layoffs and pay cuts, stunned and confused. The Shimeks' marriage may have been in bad shape, but there were no outward signs the veteran officer was capable of domestic violence, police say. He was a good, upbeat sergeant who lived with his family in a well-kept neighborhood filled with fellow officers.

"What makes this all the more difficult to understand is that he was so even-keeled. No one expected this," said police Chief Chris Moore. "Yet it happened. My main concern is that we don't see this happening again. These are very difficult times."

Beginning early Monday morning, the department brought in counselors to speak with officers about the incident.

Lynn Shimek, her friend Tammy Drews and another friend had been at Rhonda Harkins' home having a few beers at 7 p.m. Sunday. About 8:15 p.m., Drews dropped Lynn Shimek back home at Rodeo Drive with a container of homemade turkey soup.

Within the hour, friends said they started getting texts from Chris Shimek, including one that roughly said: I went too far. I'm sorry. Please don't let my kids in the house.

One of the friends sent a text to Drews, telling her to get Lynn out the house. Drews said the friend, who she would not name, told her Chris Shimek sent a text that threatened his wife.

Drews said she raced back to the Shimeks' house and knocked on the door. It was 9:15 p.m. The front door opened a bit, stopped by the chain latch. The family's dogs, Scarlet and Sheba, were sitting at the bottom of the stairs. The TV was on, but she couldn't hear anything else inside. She called police.

Gilroy police Capt. Jim Gillio said officers went to the couple's home at 9:39 p.m. They found the two bodies and signs of a violent struggle, according to sources.

The Shimeks' two boys, ages 13 and 19, are staying with a paternal aunt, friends said.

Rich Robinson, a well-known political consultant and Chris Shimek's longtime friend, said Chris, 51, had grown up in the west side of San Jose as the youngest of three kids. He graduated from Prospect High School in 1978.

"This guy was an affable person with an infectious smile," Robinson said. "I never saw him angry."

But Robinson said that Shimek was suffering in recent weeks: "He was in a lot of pain based on his domestic situation. His house was going under. There were a lot of pressures."

Lynn Shimek, 43, told a close circle of friends that she was unhappy and she wanted to leave. Chris Shimek had been completely "obsessed with her and very possessive of her," Drews said.

He pulled her phone records, checked her text messages, trolled her Facebook page and her friends' Facebook pages, and, once, even put a GPS tracker under her car, according to several friends.

He never physically harmed her, friends said, and court records show no indication of domestic violence or restraining orders. Gilroy police reported that in 2007 they responded to a call in which the officer allegedly hit his stepson, "in a rage." No further police action was taken.

Lynn Shimek was a member of the South County Derby Girls, who are having a fundraiser in her memory, and she was an avid player of Bunco, a popular parlor dice game.

Friends also said she had once been a Creative Memories consultant, selling scrapbook materials before she moved onto selling BeautiControl products. She did so well at that, friends said, that she won a car in a company contest. Most recently, she had several gigs painting faces at San Jose Sharks games and also for cruise ships, where she was able to take her family.

"She just wanted to be free and live her life without feeling like she was always being watched," Drews said. "She was done. But he was not about to let her go."

Chris Shimek isn't the first San Jose police officer to be involved with deadly domestic violence. In 1997, Officer Tom Harris killed his wife, Judy, jamming her slashed and bruised body into the trunk of her car. And while he at first tricked everyone by leading a false search for her, three days later, he put a bullet in his head on a mountaintop above Los Gatos, a place he and his wife had visited as young lovers.

Police-security work to nab shoppers with counterfeit money www.privateofficer.com

WEST NYACK NY Nov 29 2011 — Clarkstown police have arrested a Bronx woman for allegedly using counterfeit $100 bills to buy merchandise at the Palisades Center and other stores.
Officers arrested Geraldine Cepeda, 24 and Christopher Santiago, 27, of the Bronx Saturday at 5:30 p.m. the West Nyack mall after Target security officers reported a woman using $100 bill to buy merchandise at the store, Sgt. Harry Baumann said today.
The woman had left the department store but a Clarkstown police officer stopped a car along the ring road based on the woman’s description provided by security, Baumann said.
Santiago was driving the car and Cepeda was identified by Target security as the woman buying items with the $100 bills, Baumann said. Both Santiago and Cepeda had more than $500 that appeared to be legitimate money — likely change from using the $100 bills. Baumann said.
Police also found merchandise and receipts from TJ Maxx in Harriman and Spring Valley, as well as a Target store in Monroe, Baumann said.
Police charged Cepeda with four felony counts of first-degree possession of a forged instrument, one felony county of fourth-degree criminal possession of stolen property and a misdemeanor petty larceny charge.
Police charged Santiago with fourth-degree criminal possession of stolen property.
Clarkstown Justice Scott Ugell set bail for Santiago at $3,500 and for Cepeda at $5,000. They were being held in the county jail pending a Justice Court hearing set for Tuesday.
Baumann said cases of counterfeit bills being used occur throughout the year, but especially during holiday shopping seasons.
Police arrested a Brooklyn man in October on similar charges involving counterfeit $100 bills.
“Because of the holidays, the volume of people shopping increases and stores may not look at the money as carefully,” Baumann said.

Police collaboration with retail security replicated nationwide www.privateofficer.com

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M.Nov 29 2011 -A collaboration in this city between law enforcement and local retail stores has become a model retail-crime-fighting tool that is being replicated across the country.

The Albuquerque Retail Assets Protection Association was formed in 2006 as a vehicle for the Albuquerque Police Department and local retail stores to share information about retail crime. The group brings together law enforcement officers with local loss prevention professionals at monthly meetings where information about recent cases of shoplifting or organized retail crime is shared. "This isn’t sitting around having coffee and donuts and shaking hands. This is bringing real case information to share with this group of professionals on both sides," said Joe LaRocca, VP of loss prevention for the National Retail Federation, who has attended ARAPA meetings. "They solve cases in that room."

The APD recently was a finalist for a community-policing award from the International Association of Chiefs of Police for the ARAPA model. By “engag[ing] our business community through proactive enforcement and sharing of information we can be, as law enforcement, more proactive in identifying criminal patterns," said Karen Fischer, the strategic support division manager at the Albuquerque Police Department and one of the organizers of ARAPA.

But ARAPA's success wasn't always so sure. The very first meeting happened in 2006. About five or six stores participated. Some police officers were begrudgingly there, as well, sitting in the back of the room with their arms crossed thinking this was just another new idea that probably wouldn't work, Fischer said. But then a loss prevention employee from a local Walgreens stood up and posted some images of a man swiping merchandise from a shelf, "and an officer stood up and said, 'I investigated the same guy for auto burglary last week,'" Fischer told Security Director News. "And the arms became uncrossed and our partnership started."

The monthly meetings went on for a year or so, but Fischer saw a need for more real-time sharing of information. So, with the help of a web developer and some funding, she created a web portal to a secure database that allows loss prevention professionals to post information, including images, about recent cases of retail crime. All participants in the collaboration will receive the posts and a discussion thread is created to allow anyone to share relevant information as officers investigate. "So now we've moved from the traditional scenario of law enforcement of a victim calling a police officer and only two people having the information, to having a mechanism where everybody who's engaged in the partnership will simultaneously get the posting," Fischer said. "We level the communication platform."

The success of the group and its web portal has been replicated in cities such as Los Angeles, San Diego and Chicago. There are about 12 public-private partnerships across the country in the pipeline, said LaRocca.

Fischer has been approached by a number of cities seeking information about creating a similar crime-fighting web portal. She tells them all that the web portal won’t work without the partnership. "The foundation of what we're doing has got to be based on a public-private partnership in communities and … building that trust between law enforcement who will be investigating the crimes and the asset protection personnel," Fischer said. Once that foundation is in place, the stakeholders will feel comfortable sharing sensitive information through the web portal.

Another result of the success of ARAPA is a new organized crime unit the Albuquerque Police Department announced in August. The new unit will be dedicated to working with the private sector to investigate cases of organized retail crime and theft, and has already racked up a string of arrests and busted organized retail crime rings operating in the Albuquerque area, said LaRocca. It's very unique for a city the size of Albuquerque to have a dedicated retail crime unit, LaRocca said, "especially at a time when law enforcement [officials] are making decision about where to spend budget dollars."

Albuquerque's police chief, Ray Shultz, is on the "cutting edge" in terms of fighting retail crime, LaRocca said. "He recognizes it’s a gateway to so many crimes that take place," LaRocca said.

Fischer agreed. She said 80 to 95 percent of all crime that happens in a community will be property crime, and that law enforcement officials often don't take seriously all the small shoplifting cases, but they are all interrelated.

However, the original impetus of ARAPA was not to fight retail crime. It was to build community-based, public-private partnerships with the business community, Fischer said. So the Albuquerque Police Department has taken the ARAPA model and created similar public-private partnerships with the local hospitality, construction and banking sectors. Each is its own partnership, but it allows the police department to track crime across these areas and better map out criminal patterns. "We know criminals are opportunists. They won't stop at just retail stores. They will also go into hotels or steal products to manufacture meth or be involved with counterfeiting activities," Fischer said. "What I'm seeking to document is that retail crime, crime in hotels, crime of copper theft—things that tend to fly under the radar—is real crime."

Retailers expect return fraud increase this year www.privateofficer.com

YARMOUTH, Maine Nov 29 2011 —Retailers expect return fraud to increase in total this year, but don't expect it to rise during the holiday season due to tighter return policies, according to a new survey by the National Retail Federation.

The retail industry is expected to lose $3.48 billion to return fraud this holiday season, down 6.7 percent from the $3.73 billion retailers lost to the crime last holiday season, according to the survey results, which are based on the responses of loss prevention professionals at 103 major retailers.

Joe LaRocca, senior advisor for asset protection at NRF, told Security Director News that the expected drop in return fraud during the holiday season is due to retailers tightening their return policies, such as requiring a customer's identification when they don't have a receipt during the return process. Only 12.6 percent of survey respondents said they would tighten their policies this holiday season, though that is more than the 10.9 percent of retailers who said they would tighten policies during the 2010 holiday season. "Retailers have been putting checks and balances in place to prevent people from taking advantage of stores' return policies," LaRocca said in a statement.
LaRocca said retailers are also experimenting with upgrading their return procedures with new technology, such as e-receipts and attaching bar codes to tags upon checkout. He expects that trend to increase as retailers upgrade POS systems to ones that integrate returns management.

While the holiday season is not expected to bring an increase in retail fraud, the annual numbers point to a total increase. In 2011, return fraud is expected to cost retailers an estimated $14.37 billion, a 5.2 percent increase from the $13.66 billion loss in 2010, the survey revealed. The fact that overall return fraud increased in 2011, but is expected to decrease during the upcoming holiday season, surprised Joe LaRocca. It's an "inconsistency" that is uncommon, he said.

Overall, LaRocca said 2011 has not been a heartening year for retailers. "We've seen a rise in organized retail crime, shrinkage is on the rise, and now return fraud is on the rise for the full year."

Man with two loaded guns arrested at Dayton International Airport www.privateofficer.com

Dayton OH Nov 29 2011 A 24-year-old Butler County man last week attempted to walk through the Dayton International Airport security checkpoint with two loaded 9 mm pistols in his carry-on bag.

Airport police were called Nov. 23 to the checkpoint after a TSA agent spotted the semiautomatics when the agent screened the bag. A search of the bag quickly found the sidearms, which were in a mesh pocket on the top of the carry-on, according to the police report.

The man identified himself as a Butler County coin dealer. He told airport police he had put the weapons in the carry-on because he did not want to put them in his safe. He then forgot about them. When asked further questions, the man declined to answer without talking with his attorney.

Airport police then called the FBI, which eventually questioned the man, deciding not to hold him on federal charges. He was arrested in connection with state concealed carry violation and taken to the Montgomery County Jail.

One of the weapons held 17 rounds, the other 13 rounds. Airport police confiscated his concealed carry permit, forwarding it to the Butler County Sheriff for revocation, according to the police report.

Three associates of NC Governor Beverly Perdue indicted www.privateofficer.com

RALEIGH NC Nov 29 2011 -- Three associates of Governor Beverly Perdue were indicted Monday on felony charges related to her election campaign.

Trawick Hamilton "Buzzy" Stubbs and Juleigh Lee Sitton face obstruction of justice and filing false reports charges. Peter Anthony Reichard faces a single count of filing a false report.

The announcement follows an investigation by the Wake County district attorney's office that has lasted more than a year.

Reichard was Perdue's campaign finance director. Sitton was director of the Governor's Western Office until she resigned in August. Stubbs is a New Bern attorney.

The indictments allege that the trio knowingly caused the Bev Perdue Committee to file finance reports that were false in that they did not list all the contributions, loans, and expenditures that they should have.

In August 2010, the North Carolina Board of Elections fined the Perdue campaign $30,000 for "flight irregularities." The elections board said Perdue made dozens of flights aboard campaign donors' planes during the 2004 and 2008 elections that weren't disclosed in campaign-finance reports until 2009.

Stubbs is accused of contributing or paying expenses totaling more than $28,000 through his law firm by paying for flights for the benefit of the Bev Perdue Committee until Nov. 1, 2008, his indictment said. Stubbs prepared documents in October 2008 that purported the flights had been contributed to the state Democratic Party when they actually had gone for the committee, documents said.

In a statement Monday, Stubbs said he was "saddened" by news of the indictments and that he has cooperated fully with investigators. He said it was never his intent to violate any law and he intends to plead not guilty.

"I never asked for any favors nor have I received any personal benefit from my support and help advancing Beverly Perdue's campaign for Governor," he said.

The indictments accuse Sitton and Reichard of hiding that Sitton was being paid an additional $32,000 - $2,000 a month for 16 months - to work full-time for Perdue's campaign through outside money that was funneled through a merchant banking firm operated by Reichard called Tryon Capital Partners. Reichard solicited and accepted money from Morganton business owner Charles M. Fulenwider, according to the indictment. Fulenwider has not been charged.

Reichard attorney Hart Miles said his client is prepared to go to trial but would like to have the case resolve without a long trial. "I urge everyone to withhold judgment until the case is concluded and the facts are known," Miles said.

ABC11 contacted the Governor's office for comment on the indictments. In a written statement, the Governor said:

"At the District Attorney's request & I will not comment on the specific charges or any aspect of the investigation. I will, however, reiterate what I made clear at the beginning of the investigation, and what the investigation has confirmed: as a citizen, a candidate for public office, and an elected official, I have strived to follow the rules and laws. I am proud of my record, and I remain sharply focused on strengthening our schools, creating jobs and moving North Carolina forward."

Monday's indictments are not the only charges to come from Wake County District Attorney Colon Willoughby's investigation. In February, a Wake County grand jury indicted Robert Caldwell of Morganton on a felony obstruction charge. Prosecutors allege he paid for a Perdue campaign flight and then solicited a check from another man to make it look like a legitimate contribution.

Perdue's critics were quick to pounce on Monday's news. In a statement, North Carolina Republican Party Chairman Robin Hayes said the indictments were a reminder of similar campaign finance problems for Perdue's predecessor Democratic Governor Mike Easley.

"The people of North Carolina deserve better. No more corruption, no more scandals, just leadership. Next November, the people of North Carolina will send that message when they vote to replace Governor Perdue and her associates," said Hayes.

Atlanta police shoot-kill woman stabbing daughter www.privateofficer.com

ATLANTA Ga Nov 29 2011 — Police officers shot and killed a woman in an Atlanta home when she didn’t comply with orders to stop stabbing her young daughter, who also died, authorities said Monday.

Police and fire rescue personnel were called to the home Monday afternoon and were told an 8-year-old boy had been assaulted by his mother and thrown out a window, said an Atlanta Police spokesman, Maj. Keith Meadows.

Meadows said witnesses told officers the mother was alone inside the home with her young daughter. He said officers entered the house and found the mother sitting in a chair, stabbing the child.

Two officers drew their service weapons and ordered the woman to drop a knife, firing at her when she did not comply, Meadows said. He said between 10 and 16 shots were fired.

Police spokesman Carlos Campos said the stabbing victim was dead at the scene, while the 8-year-old boy was hospitalized in stable condition with apparently minor injuries. Police said they did not know if the daughter had been struck by a bullet, and did not know a motive for the attacks on the children.

Campos said the officers involved in the shooting will be placed on a routine administrative leave during the investigation.

Neighbor Lela Smith told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution that the family had lived in the home about a year and a half. She said the child who died was nearly 5 years old.

The mother’s name was not immediately released.

Elderly man repays $30 he stole from Sears in 1940's www.privateofficer.com

SEATTLE WA Nov 29 2011 (AP) — The manager of the Sears store in downtown Seattle says an elderly man has repaid — with interest — cash the man says he stole in the late 1940s.

KING-TV reports that the man hand-delivered an envelope Monday addressed to "Sears manager." Inside were a note and a $100 bill.

The note said the man stole $20 to $30 from a cash register decades ago and wanted to pay back $100.

Manager Gary Lorentson says he thinks the man's conscience "has been bothering him for the past 60 years."

Store security cameras recorded the man, but Sears officials said they don't know who he is and they won't release the video.

The store plans to put the money toward helping needy families in the holiday season.

Off-duty New York City police officer subdues unruly JetBlue passenger www.privateofficer.com

NEW YORK CITY NY Nov 29 2011 (AP) — An off-duty New York City police officer subdued and handcuffed an intoxicated passenger who attacked a flight attendant Sunday during a scuffle aboard a JetBlue plane.

Officer Anibal Mercado intervened after Antonio Ynoa of Brooklyn punched a flight attendant in the face early Sunday on JetBlue Flight 832 from the Dominican Republic to John F. Kennedy International Airport, the NYPD said.

About a half hour before the plane was scheduled to land at about 12:30 a.m., the flight attendant approached Ynoa and told him to stop drinking duty-free alcohol, police said. Ynoa became angry and punched the attendant in the face, police said.

Mercado, a patrol cop in the Bronx, told reporters that he felt compelled to intervene.

"Everybody was very alarmed," Mercado said. "I could see the fear in the passengers' faces."

Mercado told Ynoa that he was a police officer, then wrestled him to the ground and restrained him with a pair of plastic handcuffs stored on the aircraft, police said.

"He struck me a few times in the face as I was trying to restrain him," said Mercado, who is an 18-year veteran of the police force. "He was still yelling profanities. I was just telling him to calm down."

A JetBlue spokesman said the plane landed safely. When the flight landed, Ynoa was escorted off the plane by the FBI. The FBI says Ynoa, 22, will be arraigned Monday in federal court in Brooklyn on charges of assault and interference with a flight crew.

Georgia police call death of Army couple murder-suicide www.privateofficer.com

Columbus GA Nov 28 2011 City police are investigating what they’re calling the murder-suicide of an Army couple at their St. Marys Road apartment Saturday night.

Ruby Grant, 21, and Freddie Dewayne Grant, 27, were found fatally shot about 7 p.m. inside their home at Huckleberry Hill Apartments, 4570 St. Marys Road. According to a police report, officers visited the complex to conduct “a welfare check” of the couple. One neighbor said officers were also looking for a little girl who had been spotted outside the apartments.

When police stepped inside the couple’s apartment, they found the bodies, authorities said.

“When they got there is when they found the victim,” Sgt. Matt Blackstock said. “When they investigated, they found the other victim.”

Reports indicate Freddie Grant shot his wife in the head in their bedroom around 6:45 p.m. He then shot himself in the head in the same room. There is no suicide note.

Stephanie Barley, who lives in the same apartment building as the Grants, returned from work around 7 p.m. Saturday.

“I came home to a cop already here,” she said. “He asked if we had seen the little girl sitting outside at all. ... The cop said when he knocked on (the Grant’s) door, the door opened.”

The girl’s relationship to the Grants is unknown.

One man who lives in the building said he heard nothing at the time of the shooting. He saw nothing outside the apartment when he left around 11 p.m. or when he returned two hours later. No officer spoke to him, he said.

Police declined to release further details.

The Grants have been in the Columbus area since at least 2008. They moved to Huckleberry Hill Apartments about two months ago, records state.

Autopsies for both Grants are scheduled for Tuesday. Authorities hope to have preliminary results by that evening, said Muscogee County Coroner Bill Thrower.

Vermont deer hunter commits suicide after accidentally killing hunting buddy www.privateofficer.com

Readsboro VT Nov 28 2011 A Vermont deer hunter accidentally shot and killed his hunting buddy, and was so devastated he turned his rifle on himself, state police say.

Investigators say Benjamin Birch, 39, Timothy Bolognani, 49, and Mark Colford were hunting near Readsboro, Vt., on Saturday afternoon when Birch shot a deer, according to local reports.

The wounded animal managed to run off, and the trio began tracking it through the brush, local station WPTZ reported. Later Bolognani fired at what he may have thought was the deer, but instead heard Birch scream out in pain.

Bolognani and Colford later found their pal bleeding on the ground, but could do nothing to save his life. Overwhelmed with grief, Bolognani then committed suicide with his own rifle, cops say.

Man breaks into McDonald's-cooks himself a meal www.privateofficer.com

Cedar Falls IA Nov 28 2011 A 21-year-old college student turned himself into police after media coverage of Sunday's burglary at a Cedar Falls, Iowa McDonald's.

Whitley Teslow was arrested and faces several charges including burglary in the third degree, criminal mischief in the fourth degree, and theft in the fifth degree.

Surveillance cameras at the restaurant on 1st street captured video of Teslow breaking in through the drive-thru window around 2 a.m. on Sunday.

He was in the building for about half an hour.

During that time, he cooked himself a burger and fries.

In a phone interview with NBC affiliate KWWL, Teslow said he only remembers parts of the event and "was not in his right mind."

He said he is not sure how he arrived at the McDonald's, but he knows he did not drive there.

During the interview Teslow apologized to McDonald's employees and said he is willing to pay for any damages.

"It's not who I am to do something like that. I've never been in trouble with the law before. It's pretty hard for me to be able to swallow. I just hope they understand that it was a kid making a dumb mistake," Teslow said.

Teslow is concerned about how this incident may impact his future career plans.

"If the charges stand and everything like that, it's going to kind of screw up my profession and my life plan," Teslow said.

He is currently a junior at Wartburg College, majoring in Business Administration and Sports Management, with plans for an internship in Denver.

Teslow says the viral nature of the story means that he has already received more than 20 Facebook friend requests from strangers, friends have been posting on his wall and even jokingly telling him their food orders.

"I guess you can see a humorous side of it, but for me it's something that's not humorous at all," Teslow said.

Teslow faces up to five years in prison and a minimum fine of $750.

Black Friday shopper collapsed — went virtually unnoticed by others racing around him www.privateofficer.com

Logan WV Nov 28 2011 A Black Friday shopper who collapsed at a West Virginia shopping center — and later died — went virtually unnoticed by others racing to snatch up early-bird sales.

Walter Vance, 61, of Logan County, W. Va., was shopping for Christmas decorations around 12:15 a.m. at a Target in South Charleston, W. Va., when he got sick and fell to floor, local news station WSAZ reported.

Witnesses said shoppers continued walking around the store, some even stepping over the man's body.

An emergency room nurse who was among those shopping eventually found Vance and began administering CPR. She was assisted by an off-duty paramedic who was also at the store.

An ambulance was called and Vance was taken to a nearby hospital, where he died, the news station reported.

Friends said, Vance, who was the owner of a Aracome Drug Company store in Chapmanville, had heart problems for years and underwent open heart surgery in 2000.

But the way he died outraged friends.

"Where is the good Samaritan side of people?" Vance's co-worker Sue Compton told WSAZ. "How could you not notice someone was in trouble? I just don't understand if people didn't help what their reason was, other than greed because of a sale."

It wasn't the only tragedy to strike on Black Friday.

The shopping day took a chaotic turn for the worse at a Walmart in Porter Ranch, Calif., where a woman pepper sprayed a crowd of shoppers waiting to get their hands on a display of discounted X-box 360 game sets.

The woman eventually surrendered to police.

There were also reports of gun shots fired at a mall in Fayetteville, N.C., and a shooting outside a store in San Leandro, Calif., that left one shopper critically injured, the Associated Press reported.

Springfield NJ Nov 28 2011 A getaway car parked with its hazard lights on outside the 7-Eleven on Route 22 in Springfield was the tip-off for a nearby officer who witnessed three men rob the convenience store at gunpoint.

According to Springfield Police, Patrolman Brian Trotman was parked across the street on Hillside Avenue around 3 a.m. Saturday when he noticed the suspicious vehicle parked on the shoulder. Through the store windows, Trotman witnessed two men rob the store while one waited in the parked vehicle. Trotman and Patrolman James Mirabile arrested the men about a quarter-mile down the road as they were heading westbound on Route 22. Police recovered the cash drawer from one register and a handgun used in the robbery. Police have yet to release information on the cash total in the drawer. An employee was the only other person in the store at the time of the robbery.

Plainfield residents Gustavo Alasdiaz, 23, and Nestor DelGadillo, 19, and Kevin Veliz, 19, of South Plainfield were arrested on charges of armed robbery and brought to Union County Jail.

"It really couldn't have gone any better than that," Lieutenant Damon Quirk told Patch. Quirk said the department was already on alert because they had been notified about an earlier armed robbery nearby in Union. Quirk said police have yet to determine if the crimes are related.

Quirk said the 7-11 has been robbed before, but not recently. "As you see in the news, there appears to be an increase in armed robberies in the state as we're approaching the holidays," Quirk said.

WETMORE TWP., Pa.Nov 28 2011 — Andrew Snarey joined the Conway Police Department as a part-time officer fresh out of the police academy a little more than a year ago, police Chief Anthony Blum said.

“This was a very special kid. He even did a tour of duty in Iraq,” Blum said Saturday night, only a few hours after Snarey and two others were killed in a one-vehicle accident in McKean County. “I just don’t understand it.”

According to a report from Pennsylvania State Police in Kane, Pa., Snarey, 25, of 1175 Airport Road, Hopewell Township, was driving north on Route 66 down James City Hill in Wetmore Township around 1:30 p.m. when his pickup traveled off the road and struck several trees, causing it to flip once, end over end, before coming to rest on its roof.

Snarey and his father, George H. Snarey, 60, of 115 Boden Ave., Apt. 38, Carnegie, along with another passenger, Jeff W. Kramer, 28, of 1263 Oakridge Road, McDonald, were killed on impact, state police said.

A third passenger, Todd Kosenina, 42, of 78 Enlow Road, Imperial, was taken by helicopter to Hamot Medical Center in Erie with moderate injuries, police said. All four occupants were wearing seat belts, according to the report.

Blum said he hadn’t heard any information about the accident other than what was released by state police, but said he believed Snarey and the others were heading north for a hunting trip.

Snarey also served as a part-time officer with Harmony Township Police Department and recently joined Baden Police Department, Baden Police Chief David Christner said.

“He was wonderful, the kids in town loved him; the people in town loved him,” Blum said.

A state police investigation of the accident is ongoing.

Occupy Harrisburg member arrested at mall over a zombie outfit www.privateofficer.com

Harrisburg PA Nov 28 2011 Occupy Harrisburg says a member of its group has been arrested at a city mall on Black Friday over a zombie outfit.

Lower Allen police said a young woman was arrested after refusing mall security's request to remove the facial makeup. The Capital City Mall bans outfits that obscure a person's face.

The protester, Jenn Hara, said she was merely asking security for more information about the mall's regulation when she was handcuffed and charged with misdemeanor trespassing.

Occupy Harrisburg organizers say members dressed as zombies to protest the consumerism of the celebrated shopping day that puts shoppers further in debt. They say the protesters walked peacefully through the mall early Friday and did not disrupt shoppers.

And in Allentown, police have disrupted an attempt by Occupy Allentown demonstrators to set up a second campsite in the eastern Pennsylvania city. The Morning Call reports police chased two activists from a traffic island in the city's West End on Friday night.
