Columbus GA police officer arrested after disturbance with mall security www.privateofficer.com

COLUMBUS, Ga. Marxh 23 2011The Columbus Police Chief takes action against one of his officers following an argument between a mall security officer and an off-duty police officer.

The officer now banned from Peachtree Mall for a year. 24-year-old Jonathan Jackson has been arrested and charged with criminal trespass.

According to Columbus Police Chief Ricky Boren, Jackson has been employed with the Columbus Police Department for two years.

According to police reports, Jackson was at the Sunglass Hut in the mall last Monday.

Reports say that when a mall security officer came to talk to an employee at the store, Jackson told the officer to "Not stand behind him like that."

The mall officer told Jackson to calm down, that’s when reports say Jackson identified himself as a Columbus Police Officer and said he had weapons on him.

When Jackson refused to leave, security called 9-1-1.

"He was told to leave several times. Mall security pressed charges for criminal tress pass and our officers arrested and took him to Recorders Court and he was bound over to State Court for trial,” says Columbus Police Chief Ricky Boren.

Boren says these types of incidents are rare and when they do happen, they do not treat the officers any differently.

“Individual gets out there and breaks any law, they will be dealt with like any other citizen would be,” says Boren.

Mall security would not go on camera nor would the employee who was working at Sunglass Hut at the time...but she did say she was frightened and later had anxiety attacks from the incident.

Chief Boren says he has asked the Office of Professional Standards to step in.

Boren says it usually results in an arrest or in this case, an additional arrest.
