Stamford CT school guard charged with sex assault of student www.privateofficer.com

STAMFORD CT March 31 2010
Source:Stamford Advocate -- A 52-year-old Stamford High School security guard arrested Monday on sexual assault charges admitted paying a 15-year-old female student for her underwear, police said.

Pasquale Mecca, of Diaz Street, Stamford, was charged Monday afternoon with fourth-degree sexual assault and three counts of risk of injury to a minor. He was released on $25,000 bond and is due in court April 12.

An investigation began when the girl's guardian questioned her about having large amounts of cash, said police Lt. James Matheny; the girl said she was paid by Mecca for her underwear.

The exchanges took place on and off school grounds, during school hours and when school was not in session, police said. Mecca allegedly bought the girl's underwear at least three times for varying amounts of money. Police did not disclose how much he paid.

"For a 15-year-old kid it seemed like a lot of money," Matheny said.

Investigators took statements from the girl, her guardian and Mecca, who admitted he bought girl's underwear and had improper physical contact with her on at least one occasion.

Police are urging anyone with information about the allegations or similar, unreported incidents to come forward.

"We have one victim and one case right now, but once these things develop, there's a possibility that we find out more," Matheny said.

Mecca's home was searched by police, who found several items related to the case. Matheny would not disclose the items, but said it was too early to tell whether they would play a role in the investigation.

Mecca was charged with fourth-degree sexual contact because he had improper physical contact with a person under age 18 while he was in a position of authority, not because of the degree of physical contact or whether it was consensual.

The charge is a felony offense when the victim is under 15 years old.

Sarah Arnold, the school district spokeswoman, said Mecca has been suspended from his job and is not allowed on Board of Education property.

His suspension is subject to an investigation by the school district, she said

Mecca became a school district employee in 2001, and worked as a security guard at Stamford High for his entire career except for a year when he worked as a teacher's aide at Scofield Magnet Middle School in 2003.

Mecca has no record of prior discipline at Stamford High, Arnold said.

The investigation is ongoing and police urge anyone with more information to call the Stamford Police Department at 977-4639 or 977-4417.

DAYTON OH MARCH 31 2010 — James C. Locker, Jr., 50, one of two Moonlight Security guards wounded early Tuesday morning, March 30, at the Western Manor Apartment Complex on James H. McGee Boulevard, was in the intensive care unit, still listed in critical condition at Miami Valley Hospital this morning, Wednesday, March 31.

The other security guard shot, William St. Peter, 54, was still in Miami Valley Hospital. His condition was not listed.

Police said Tuesday that the security guard wearing a protective vest during the shooting was in stable condition and expected to go home soon, while the other guard, shot in the torso, was taken to the hospital in critical condition and had undergone emergency surgery.

Christopher Beatty-Jones, the suspect in the shooting, which occurred around 1 a.m. Tuesday, was taken into custody at his home at 3933 Prescott Ave. shortly before 10 a.m. Tuesday. He was booked into the Montgomery County Jail on a felonious assault charge.

The guards were shot when questioning a passenger, Jodi Grigsby, in the vehicle Beatty-Jones had fled upon their approach. Beatty-Jones returned and fired five times at the officers, hitting each one of them once.

Just last week, on March 22, Grigsby and Beatty-Jones were together near the Summit Square Apartments when Grigsby was shot in the arm, according to a police report, which stated Beatty-Jones said he was there to buy $50 worth of marijuana when someone shot at their vehicle.

Monticello teacher charged with child seduction www.privateofficer.com

Monticello IN March 31 2010 - A Monticello teacher was arrested and charged with child seduction for an incident that reportedly happened during school hours.

Investigators say 58-year-old Mark Hay, a teacher at Twin Lakes High School, allegedly fondled a female high school student at school from March 2007 through May 2009. Police say the victim was between the ages of 16 and 18 during that time.

"The charge in this case is one count of child seduction, Class D Felony," said ISP Det. Jim Cody. "The allegations are that he touched and fondled a student in a sexual manner on school property during school hours.

Hay, a former head football coach, was booked at the White County Jail, but is now out on bond.

"Twin Lakes Schools officials address all such allegations very seriously and will professionally perform all duties to educate and protect our students," Superintendent Dr. Thomas Fletcher wrote in a statement.

The statement says Hay was suspended and when told he faced firing, "Mr. Hay presented his resignation with the intent to retire." The school board will take up Hay's resignation April 13.

It's the second time in two months an ex-coach and teacher at the school has been arrested for inappropriate sexual conduct with a female student. In January, it was wrestling coach Scott Hardy. State police say the two cases are unrelated.

"Had quite a few in this small of a town in this short of time," said resident Rick Kinkle. "Real surprised to see."

Hay couldn't be reached for comment and his wife had no comment on the charges facing her husband.

"I actually am appalled that could have gone on in the first place," said parent Jim DeKoster.

"Very definitely hard to believe," said a woman who knows Hay. "And he's not been proven guilty yet."

Residents are concerned for the children in the schools.

"I don't understand what's going on with these men," said Monticello resident Robert Peck. "It shouldn't be going on with these school kids, period. They should know better."

"My main concern is, how we can stop this and keep it from happening in the future? We put our trust in these people. We have got to know we can have our kids going to school safely.

Security officer shot waiting for bus www.privateofficer.com

ORANGE COUNTY, Fla.March 30 2010 (WOFL FOX 35) - Several people called 911 seconds after a man fell to the ground with multiple gun shot wounds. Deputies rushed to Lee Road near Edgewater Drive just before nine o’clock Monday night.
They met with the victim who told them a gunman in a white Dodge Charger had just sped away. Investigators said other witnesses also saw the vehicle and three men in the car.

Deputies had the descriptions and while patrolling in the area of John Young Parkway and North Orange Blossom Trail they spotted a white Charger. The car was at the drive-thru window of a fast food restaurant. Witnesses at the restaurant said deputies waited for the driver to pull away from the window before moving in. Kametric Peterson works at the restaurant and said he saw deputies handcuff all three men in the car.

Peterson said deputies were yelling all while they had their guns trained on the car. Investigators then spent much of the night trying to figure out which of the men pulled the trigger. One of them was later arrested but detectives haven’t released the name of the gunman or the victim. Deputies said he is a security guard who was walking to catch the bus. He was rushed to The Orlando Regional Medical Center where his condition is unknown. Investigators haven’t said why he was targeted only that the shooting doesn’t appear to be related to drugs.

Security nabs man stealing boxes of steaks www.privateofficer.com

Seattle WA March 30 2010
Source:PI Some criminals go for cash, copper wire, electronics, fancy jewelry.

But Jimmie Lane Jr.? Police say his tastes ran more toward boneless beef tenderloin.

Court documents also suggest the 58-year-old is a meathead bandit.

About 8 p.m. March 23, police were called to the QFC in the 400 block of 15th Avenue East where employees said an unknown man was loading boxes of frozen meat into a blue Saturn.

As officers were en route, an employee called back saying store security was struggling with the suspect, later identified as Lane.

Police arrived and found his car backed to the loading dock on the northeast side of the store. The rear hatchback was open. A large box of beef was in the trunk, investigators said.

"Four more boxes of meat were seen sitting on the edge of the loading dock," Officer Daniel Auderer wrote in his report. "A pair of red bolt cutters was lying on the ground near the vehicle. A few feet from the bolt cutters was a screwdriver with a wooden handle also lying on the ground."

Court documents say the meat Lane allegedly tried to steal was worth $5,637,54.

A QFC employee first noticed Lane about 7:30 p.m. in the store's stockroom. He said he was looking for the bathroom.

Police believe at some point, he tried to cut the chain that operated the roll-up door from the loading dock to the stockroom.

That is, security guards told police, until he realized the loading dock door wasn't locked.

Lane allegedly asked the guard if he was an officer. The man said no, so Lane asked him to help carry boxes, saying he would "cut him in on the deal," according to investigators.

The man helped in what appeared to be an attempt to gather evidence. After loading beef into the blue Saturn, the security guard told police he showed his badge and identified himself to Lane.

"When I tried to stop him," the man told police, "he tried to stab me with a screwdriver."

Lane tried to flee with a box of meat in his trunk, but another security guard opened the passenger side of his Saturn, struggled with Lane and handcuffed him, according to the report.

It was time to stick a fork in him. He was done.

Police said store security video shows Lane going into the back of QFC with bolt cutters after his car was parked by the loading dock. He's also allegedly shown stealing tenderloin twice from the frozen meat locker.

Prosecutors said he's a flight risk -- Lane has had 104 warrants since 1985.

His history includes convictions for vehicle theft, three burglary cases, three theft cases, possession of stolen property, forgery, DUI and unlawful issuance of bank checks. Lane also has a pending first-degree theft case in King County Superior Court and a third-degree theft case.

While being transported to King County Jail, Lane admitted to stealing the beef, but denied trying to stab the security officer, police said.

In lieu of $101,00 bail, he remains in jail, where staff Capt. Troy Bacon said Lane will receive sack lunches and other meals.

"Inmates are served a variety of food," he said. "But it won't be steak, let me tell you that."

Husband kills wife, children, commits suicide in Charlotte www.privateofficer.com

CHARLOTTE, N.C. NC March 30 2010 -- A woman and two of her children were found dead after her husband shot and killed himself in southeast Charlotte, police say.

The victims have been identified as 34-year-old Nateesha Ward Chapman, 1-year-old Nakyiah Jael Chapman, and 13-year-old Na'Jhae Parker.

The suspect was identified as 33-year-old Kenneth Jermaine Chapman.

Officers tell NewsChannel 36 that they received a call at about 11:15 p.m. Monday from Nateesha Chapman's uncle, requesting that they check on her. When officers got to the apartment on Providence Square Drive that she shared with her husband and four children, they found the door open and Kenneth Chapman standing at the top of the stairs inside.

FBI arrests "Christian" militia members planning attack on cops www.privateofficer.com

DETROIT MI March 29 2010– Nine suspects tied to a Christian militia that was preparing for the Antichrist were charged with conspiring to kill police officers, then kill scores more by attacking a funeral using homemade bombs, federal prosecutors said Monday.

The Michigan-based group, called Hutaree, planned to use the attack on police as a catalyst for a larger uprising against the government, according to newly unsealed court papers. U.S. Attorney Barbara McQuade said agents moved quickly on the group because its members were planning a violent mission sometime in April.

Members of the group, including its leader, David Brian Stone, also known as "Captain Hutaree," were charged following FBI raids over the weekend on locations in Michigan, Ohio and Indiana. Seven people were arraigned in Detroit on Monday, and another one of Stone's sons, Joshua, is being sought.

Stone's ex-wife, Donna Stone, told The Associated Press before the arraignments that her former husband was to blame for pulling her son into the movement. She said David Brian Stone legally adopted her son, David Brian Stone Jr., who is among those indicted.

"It started out as a Christian thing," said Donna Stone, 44. "You go to church. You pray. You take care of your family. I think David started to take it a little too far."

According to the indictment, the group had been meeting and conducting military-style training exercises in the Michigan woods since 2008 to prepare for an impending war with its enemies. Members practiced building and detonating explosives and shooting firearms and built storage bunkers, investigators said.

The group says on its Web site that Hutaree means "Christian warrior" and describes the word as part of a secret language that few are privileged to know. The group quotes several Bible passages and states: "We believe that one day, as prophecy says, there will be an Anti-Christ. ... Jesus wanted us to be ready to defend ourselves using the sword and stay alive using equipment."

The site also features a picture on the site of 17 camouflaged men, all holding large guns, and includes videos of camouflaged men toting guns and running through wooded areas in apparent training exercises. Each wears a patch on his left shoulder that bears a cross and two red spears.

According to investigators, the Hutaree view local, state, and federal law enforcement personnel as a "brotherhood" and an enemy, and planned to attack them as part of an armed struggle against the U.S. government.

The idea of attacking a police funeral was one of numerous scenarios discussed as ways to go after law enforcement officers, the indictment said. Other scenarios included using a fake 911 call to lure an officer to his or her death, killing an officer after a traffic stop or an attacking the family of a police officer.

Once other officers gathered for a slain officer's funeral, the group planned to detonate homemade bombs at the funeral, killing scores more, according to the indictment.

After the attacks, the group allegedly planned to retreat to "rally points" protected by trip-wired improvised explosive devices, or IEDs, for what they expected would become a violent standoff with law enforcement personnel.

The indictment says members of the group conspired "to levy war against the United States, (and) to oppose by force the authority of the government of the United States."

The charges against the eight include seditious conspiracy, possessing a firearm during a crime of violence, teaching the use of explosives, and attempting to use a weapon of mass destruction — homemade bombs. All seven defendants in court on Monday requested to be represented by the federal defender's office, and a bond hearing is set for Wednesday.

The arrests have dealt "a severe blow to a dangerous organization that today stands accused of conspiring to levy war against the United States," U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder said Monday.

The raids on the group began over the weekend. FBI agents in Michigan swarmed a rural, wooded property Saturday evening in Adrian, about 70 miles southwest of Detroit. The same night in Hammond, Ind., law enforcement agents flooded a neighborhood, startling workers at a nearby pizzeria. In Ohio, authorities blocked off streets and raided two homes.

Outside Adrian, Heidi Wood, who lives near the property that was raided, said she hears gunshots "all the time" from near two ramshackle trailers that sit side-by-side. On Monday, a long gun leaned against a washing machine that sat in the yard, and on top of a nearby canister was another long gun.

Wood's mother, Phyllis Brugger, who has lived in the area for more than 30 years, said Stone and his family were known as having ties to militia. They would shoot guns and often wore camouflage, she said.

"Everybody knew they were militia," Brugger said. "You don't mess with them."

In Ohio, one of the raids occurred at Bayshore Estates, a well-kept trailer park in Sandusky, a small city on Lake Erie between Toledo and Cleveland. Neighbors said the man taken into custody lived in a trailer on a cul-de-sac with his wife and two young children.

The man's wife, Kelly Sickles, said her husband collected guns as a hobby. Agents searched their home for bomb-making materials, she said, but she couldn't believe her husband, Kristopher Sickles, 27, could be connected to a group that was plotting anything violent.

"He doesn't even know how to make a bomb," she said. "We had no bomb material here."

JC Penney security officer shoots to stop shoplifter www.privateofficer.com

Roanoke VA March 29 2010 Valley View Mall shoppers Sunday afternoon said a security guard who fired a gun to stop a suspected shoplifter Friday was too heavy-handed in his approach.

"You shoot at somebody because they're shoplifting? Nobody's life is in danger," said Gene Goodman of Pearisburg.

Roanoke police spokeswoman Aisha Johnson said a J.C. Penney security guard followed a shoplifting suspect to the mall parking lot and fired a single shot in an effort to stop him. The man was detained until police arrived.

Jared Stephen Ware, 40, of Christiansburg was arrested and charged with grand larceny, Johnson said. She said that police confiscated the Penney guard's weapon and his use of it is being investigated. No one was injured.

Penney managers declined to comment about the incident over the weekend. Johnson would not say whether the weapon taken was the guard's personal weapon or job-issued. Uniformed mall security guards were not carrying guns Sunday.

Goodman said the security guard in Friday's incident put bystanders in danger and should have given any findings to the police once Ware made it outside.

Stephanie Pruchniak of Pearisburg said she respects anyone's right to carry a weapon, but said it was "crazy" for it to be used in this instance.

"Quite frankly, that would have scared me," said Brooke Feazell of Roanoke.

Her friend Coreina Nester of Roanoke said the incident could have happened anywhere, but it gives her something to think about because she frequents the mall.

"That was a bit much," Nester said.

Valley View Mall's management office was closed for the weekend and officials could not be reached. Calls and e-mails to J.C. Penney's media relations department throughout the weekend were not returned.

Brevard County Fla March 29 2010 Aboard the Carnival Sensation in the wee hours of Sunday morning, a 31-year-old Virginia man was heard shouting "We are jihad," and "Come to the top deck and watch the bomb," according to a U.S. Coast Guard spokesman. Other reports said he was very inebriated.

The words were later determined to be a hoax and the passenger, Ibrahim Khalil Zarou of Leesburg, Virginia, who had been cruising as part of a party of 12, was arrested by Brevard County Sheriff's Office officials for making a false bomb threat.

But Zarou's words, which were reported by another passenger to ship officials, started a chain of events that included the ship being held four miles off the Florida coast for several hours and being boarded by the Coast Guard, FBI and local sheriff's office officials; a search by bomb-sniffing dogs, conducted at Port Canaveral (where the ship had been headed), and a Unified Command being established, involving several government agencies.

In other words, there was a plan and it was put into action.

The "threat" was first reported to ship personnel around 4 a.m., and an exhaustive search for a bomb was conducted by onboard security personnel, according to USCG spokesman Christopher Evanson, Petty Officer First Class.

The 87-foot coast guard cutter Shrike was called in to assist in bringing USCG, FBI and other law enforcement officials to the scene and in establishing a security zone around the vessel, which had 3,740 passengers and crew onboard.

They arrived around 9:30 a.m., and conducted an additional bomb search and also interviewed eyewitnesses and the suspect. The arrest was made.

Back in Port Canaveral, where the Sensation was headed on the last leg of a 3-day Bahamas cruise, dogs were brought in to search Terminal 5, and a Unified Command was established. Represented at the command post were the USCG, FBI, Transportation Safety Administration, Port Canaveral Police Department, Canaveral Fire and Rescue, Customs and Border Protection, Immigration and Customs Enforcement and Federal Air Marshal's Service, as well as Carnival Cruise Line.

After it was determined there was no credible bomb threat, the ship was allowed to return to port, arriving at about 10:45 a.m., some five hours later than scheduled. Some passengers had to rebook missed flights home.

Extra security personnel remained at Port Canaveral throughout the day, yesterday. The ship was cleared for its next cruise, embarking yesterday evening.

UPDATE (11:33 a.m.): Florida Today is reporting Ibrahim Khalil Zarou, a heating and air conditioning salesman, was released on $10,000 bond. No court date has been set for a hearing on the charge of false reporting of a bomb threat.

charlotte teacher faces 2nd sex charge www.privateofficer.com

Charlotte NC March 29 2010 A 39-year-old former Charlotte-Mecklenburg high school teacher already charged with sexual activity with a 17-year-old female student has been charged with sexual activity with a second, 16-year-old female student, police said Sunday.

Brett Haight taught in the Global Studies and Economics Academy at Olympic High School.

A parent alerted authorities Dec. 1 and Haight resigned Jan. 6. He was arrested in February and charged with sexual activity with the 17-year-old girl.

Investigators said the sexual activity happened at Haight's home and at the school in late November, and that they were looking into the possibility other students were victimized.

Sunday, police re-arrested Haight, who'd been free on $25,000 bond. He now faces a charge of taking indecent liberties with a student in addition to his previous charge of sexual activity with a student.

Haight is in Mecklenburg County jail under $10,000 bond.

RBC Bank employee gets prison for thefts www.privateofficer.com

MOBILE, Ala. March 29 2010 -- A former RBC Bank employee will spend the next two years in prison for embezzling more than $86,000 in 2007 and 2008, a federal judge in Mobile decided last week.

Dana Aline Dyess Williams, 33, of Coden, worked for the bank for 15 years. She admitted that she transferred funds from customers' accounts into hers and her parents' accounts for her own personal use.

According to her written plea agreement, Williams made 32 fraudulent transactions totaling $92,648. After she learned the bank had started an investigation, she put $6,000 back into one of the accounts, reducing the total loss to $86,648.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Deborah Griffin urged U.S. District Judge Kristi DuBose to impose an 18-year sentence for the fraud, on top of the mandatory two-year prison term for aggravated identity theft.

"She involved numerous other bank customers, including her own parents, putting them at risk," Griffin said.

DuBose opted for punishment closer the defense position: two years and two months. The judge also ordered Williams to serve three years on supervised release after she gets out of prison and pay the bank back at a rate of $300 a month.

Waxhaw NC police officer dies after training injury www.privateofficer.com

Waxhaw NC March 28 2010

A silent procession of police cruisers from across Union County filed into the parking lot at Love Baptist Church Saturday.

Family and friends gathered to say their final goodbyes to 37-year-old Richard Belk.

"He was very strong, but still very gentle, still very concerned about everyone else,” said family friend, Blanche Wimberly. “He was just a wonderful person."

Belk was an officer with the Waxhaw Police Department. He was injured last year during a training run and died Wednesday morning.

"No more suffering, no more trips to the doctor's office, not another pill to take, another surgery to face,” said the Rev. Don Thompson. “Hallelujah, we are here to celebrate. This is how Richard would have wanted it.”

The church celebrated Belk's life; sharing memories like how the officer always had a Bible with him in his police car. And how a day never went by when Belk's shoes weren't shined clean.

Fellow officers filled the church for the emotional goodbye, where a solo bagpiper escorted Belk to his final resting place. He also received a graveside gun salute.

In lieu of flowers, family asked that memorial contributions be made directly to the Richard Payne Belk family.

St. Clair County Sheriff Mearl Justus called Reid "a cop's cop" and the kind of employee that every boss wants.

PE teacher arrested for child porn www.privateofficer.com

Atlanta GA March 28 2010 Sheriff's deputies have charged an elementary school physical education teacher with possession and distribution of child pornography.

The Athens Banner-Herald reports Saturday that 46-year-old Barry Bailey, of Hull, was jailed Thursday after an online chatting session with an undercover investigator.

Police and school system officials said the offenses don't involve a school computer or local children and didn't happen during the school day.

Shawn Burns, chief deputy of the Madison County Sheriff's Department, said there was no evidence that Bailey created the photos or videos involving children that were on his computer.

Bailey has taught physical education at Ila Elementary since August 2001. Also Thursday, the FBI arrested 41-year-old Hall County school bus driver John Spinks on federal charges related to the receipt, possession and distribution of child pornography.

Al. man arrested for rape of three 11 yr old girls www.privateofficer.com

FLORENCE AL March 28 2010 - A registered sex offender from Tennessee is in jail after police said he raped and sodomized three girls ages 11 and younger.

Danny Ray Haywood, 38, 35 Simpson St., Florence, is charged with three counts of first-degree rape, three counts of first-degree sodomy, three counts of sexual abuse of a child less than 12 years old, and one other sex-related offense.

Detectives said Haywood also was charged with second-degree possession of marijuana after drugs were found on him at the time of his arrest.

Police said the crimes took place during a course of five or six years.

Authorities said two of the girls are now teenagers. The crimes took place when they were between 4 and 10 years old.

Police said the third girl, who is younger than 10, was 3 years old when the crimes occurred. Authorities said the last crime was in 2009.

Florence detective Keith Johnson said he began an investigation March 2 after being contacted by the Lauderdale County Department of Human Resources.

"One of the older girls confided in someone, who then told her mother," Johnson said. "The girl's mother then contacted DHR and they conducted an investigation. Once that was concluded, they called us."

Police said the investigation revealed the abuse took place during a time Haywood lived in the area.

Johnson said that in the past 10 years, Haywood has lived in 10 different locations in Florence and Lauderdale County and the attacks apparently occurred at the various places.

Johnson said Haywood has denied the allegations.

Reports indicate Haywood was charged in Nashville with sexual battery of a 13-year-old girl in 1993.

According to a report by the Rape, Abuse and Incest National Network 15 percent of sexual assault and rape victims are under the age of 12 and that 7 percent of girls in grades 5-8 and 12 percent of girls in grades 9-12 said they had been sexually abused.

The report also points out that nearly 30 percent of child victims were between ages of 4 and 7.

According to statistics, more than 90 percent of the attackers are family members or acquaintances.

The rape and sodomy charges are both Class A felonies and are punishable by 10 years to life in prison if convicted. Sexual abuse is a Class B felony and carries a punishment of two to 20 years in prison if found guilty.

Haywood is being held in the Lauderdale County Detention Center without bail.

SC man dies during fight with security www.privateofficer.com

Greenville SC March 27 2010 A 36-year-old Moore man died Thursday night after a fight with security guards at a strip club off I-385, Greenville County sheriff's deputies said.

Authorities said Joseph Collura of 540 Candlewick Court started having trouble breathing after the fight at Platinum Plus and died at Greenville Memorial Hospital.

Deputies said the investigation into the death could take weeks as authorities interview the more than 100 people in the club at the time.

Tom Selfridge, Greenville County deputy coroner, reported Friday that Collura died as a result of asphyxiation due to pressure on the neck, but he told News Channel 7 that an official cause of death would not be determined until toxicology results are returned.

Investigators said the fight appeared to start when guards tried to check Collura's ID.

No charges have been filed in the case.

Trenton school security stage sick out www.privateofficer.com

TRENTON NJ March 27 2010
Source: NJ.com -- Trenton Central High School scrambled to provide security at its front doors and other posts yesterday after the school's guards called in sick and attended a school board meeting to protest the possible outsourcing of their jobs.

The Chamber Street campus normally has 18 security officers on duty over two shifts, but yesterday only six reported in, a police department source said.

Police reassigned an officer normally tasked with picking up truant students to join the resource officer stationed at the high school, and other school staff helped stand in for the absent guards.

About half of the district's 85 security guards went to a morning meeting the board had scheduled to approve the district's 2010-2011 budget, board vice president Alexander Brown said.

The district is putting out a request for bids from private security companies to see if it can save money by replacing its current guard staff, Superintendent Rodney Lofton said.

The guards belong to the Trenton Business and Technical Association. Tanisha Powell, president of the association, said she doesn't see how the $2 million the district wants to spend on guards could possibly provide sufficient services for a district that has frequently struggled with violence on and around school campuses.

"We're concerned about what kind of quality of personnel we're going to get," Powell said. "We're concerned about the safety of the students and the staff. The guards have been here for years. The kids know them, and they know about (the) community.

"It's not even about the money. It's about security."

While the board privatized its cafeterias last year and discussed outsourcing building and trades work, Lofton told the guards that putting out a bid request will not necessarily lead to the hiring of a private security company.

"We've done this before, and we did not privatize. It's a request for proposals," he said. "We expressed to them that if we can generate revenue from other places, we won't follow through on this proposal."

The board is looking for $1 million in savings, either through the guard outsourcing or other means, Brown said. Two other proposals are to find a less expensive insurance carrier or to lower special education costs by moving more students into a program run by St. Francis hospital, he said.

"If both of those things can happen, we won't be laying off any security guards, and we can reduce the total number of layoffs in the district," he said. "It's not just about security guards."

The $278.5 million budget for 2010-2011 that the board approved Friday calls for the elimination of 215 positions. Most of those would come from layoffs, though attrition, retirements and callbacks in the fall could reduce the number of people who lose their jobs

Kristina Murch TSA Officer of the Year www.privateofficer.com

Minneapolis MN March 27 2010 Kristina Murch is one of a number of Americans employed by a relatively new government agency: the Transportation Security Administration.

The 24-year-old from Pine Island is finding success in her job, screening passengers at the Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport.

She recently received the Minnesota Transportation Security Officer of the Year award from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, which oversees the TSA.

The federal government created the TSA after the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, hiring tens of thousands of transportation security officers to screen airline passengers at U.S. airports. Today, there are 48,000 officers working nationwide; 37,000 are full-time employees, said TSA spokeswoman Carrie Harmon. At the Minneapolis-St. Paul airport, she said, there are between 600 and 650 full-time security officers.

Murch joined the TSA three years ago, shortly after finishing a law enforcement degree at Vermilion Community College in Ely, Minn.

She works at Checkpoint 10, which primarily screens airline crew members and business travelers who know their way around. Every so often, Murch helps regular passengers figure out the confusing aspects of the airport and TSA policies, such as removing shoes and what to do about liquids. That's the part of her job she likes the best, she said.

"Because you're not just screening to make sure nothing prohibitive goes on the plane. You're really helping people get through the airport and get through fast. And even when you're on your break, you're still helping people, giving them directions or giving them advice," she said.

Murch was nominated by her supervisors for her eagerness to help people and for her take-charge attitude at the checkpoint. Federal security officials presented her with the award during a ceremony on Jan. 27.

Undercover Nashville officers shoot 3 hotel robbery suspects www.privateofficer.com

NASHVILLE, Tenn.March 26 2010 – According to Kristin Mumford with the Metro Nashville Police Department, a coincidence led to the arrest of three would-be robbers Thursday morning.

Undercover Officer Justin Fox was at the right place at the right time.

"You know these guys came to a gun battle and little did they know they were going to meet someone who was also ready to do what it took to make people safe," said Metro Police Chief Ronal Serpas.

Fox and a Tennessee Highway Patrol officer were working a separate investigation at the Hyatt Place Hotel, which is just off Old Hickory Boulevard near Brentwood, when three robbers walked into the lobby around 2:30 a.m. with guns drawn.

The robbers held the clerk and gunpoint and were forcing her to give them cash when Fox and the other officer entered the lobby.

According to a Metro police report, the suspects ordered the officers to the floor at gunpoint, striking, kicking and threatening to kill them. Before Fox was completely on the ground, he pulled out his gun, turned around and shot all three suspects.

The suspects did not return fire, and the THP officer did not fire a weapon.

Despite being shot, the three suspects, identified as 23-year-old Deaunte Carter, 22-year-old Rory Gilmer and 20-year-old Antonio Leggs, got away in a maroon mini-van.

Fox followed the mini-van in his unmarked police vehicle and radioed directions to dispatch. The mini-van was then pulled over without incident on Interstate 65 North around the Wedgewood Avenue exit.

"He did a tremendous job in protecting himself, protecting the other officer and protecting most importantly the citizens who were being held in fear of their life by these three fellows," said Serpas. "He made decisions he had to make to save people's lives, and that's exactly what he did and that's what he should have done."

Medics were called to the scene, and emergency officials rushed the three suspects to Vanderbilt University Medical Center. Carter and Gilmer were listed in critical condition, and Leggs has been updated to stable condition.

Mumford said that 40 minutes before robbing the Hyatt Place, the gunmen robbed three victims in the parking lot of the Homewood Suites on Church Street. Two purses and a wallet were stolen from the out-of-town business guests, but have since been recovered.

Multiple attempted aggravated robbery arrest warrants have been issued against all three suspects. Additional aggravated robbery charges are anticipated. Federal charges are pending.

According to the police report, Leggs has two previous theft convictions. Gilmer has been arrested eleven times.

"Everyone deserves to know that this is the kind of case that continues to point us to repeat offenders," said Serpas. "These guys have been in and out of trouble. They're not new to the system."

Fox was put on administrative assignment for the time being.

Armed man at Mall of America falls to his death www.privateofficer.com

St. Paul MN March 26 2010 A 21-year-old Guilderland man plunged to his death Wednesday night at the Mall of America in Minnesota after security officers responded to a report of a man with a knife.
Dakota Ray Kohler-Lander was free on $5,000 bail and had been scheduled to appear Wednesday morning before Albany County Judge Thomas Breslin for arraignment on an indictment charging one count of third-degree rape.
It was not immediately known why Kohler-Lander was in Minnesota.

Guilderland Police Chief Carol Lawlor said her department notified the man's family Wednesday night of his death. Lawlor had no details of the incident.

The Minneapolis Star Tribune's Web site said Kohler-Lander fell four floors to his death. Security officers were called around 6:50 p.m. about a man with a knife, the newspaper reported, quoting police. Within seconds of the officers approaching Kohler-Lander, he climbed over the railing and fell to the first floor of the mall in Bloomington.

The Hennepin County, Minn., medical examiner's office ruled as the cause of death multiple blunt-force injuries. It had yet to determine whether the fall was an accident.

Kohler-Lander, who lived on Evelyn Drive, was arrested last Oct. 1 for allegedly having sex in Guilderland with a girl who was 16 at the time and too young to consent, authorities said.

"This is a family that has had a lot of tragedy, and, although there is an accusation of a crime, all individuals are presumed innocent," said Heather Orth, spokeswoman for Albany County District Attorney David Soares. "This is definitely not the way we would have liked to have seen this case come to an end."

Orth's reference was to the death last June of Kohler-Lander's twin brothers, Alexander and Zachary Rohloff, 17, who were killed while riding separate ATVs in Schaghticoke and hit head-on near the apex of a small hill. Neither teen was wearing a helmet at the time, and officials said they may not have known they were each headed toward the same hilltop.

Florida escapee on the lam 27 years captured in NC www.privateofficer.com

WILMINGTON, NC March 26 2010 (CBS4)

An escaped Florida State Prison inmate who has been on the lam since 1983 is headed back to a Sunshine State jail cell after he was arrested in North Carolina Wednesday night. Now almost 70, Charles Lee Sparks was nabbed when he tried to do what many elderly people do; apply for social security benefits. He now has a new retirement plan, courtesy of the state of Florida.

Sparks, who was serving a 20 year sentence for trafficking in Quaaludes, was arrested by police in Wilmington, North Carolina, after they were tipped off by the Social Security Administration.

Police arrested him Wednesday when he arrived to keep an appointment at the Wilmington social security office.

Investigators say Sparks was using the identity of William Bolyn Garrett, a Virginia man who died in 1983, the same year Sparks drove away from a north Florida prison facility in a Pontiac Lemans he was washing as part of a prison work detail.

Originally, Sparks was charged with identity fraud when federal officials determined the man he was impersonating had been dead for 27 years, but a fingerprint check tagged Sparks as a fugitive. Despite the decades of freedom, Florida officials never officially stopped looking for Sparks, whose name was in a federal database of escaped fugitives.

Sparks, who was originally held on $200 thousand bond, saw his bond canceled and is now being held for return to Florida on a fugitive from justice charge.

Sparks had about 18 years left on his sentence when he escaped.

"Our message to fugitives like Mr. Sparks remains the same -- we will never stop looking for you. I'd like to thank the New Hanover County Sheriff's Office for bringing Mr. Sparks to justice," said Florida Department of Corrections Secretary Walter McNeil.

Almost 400 Florida fugitives have been captured since 2007, when the Corrections department formed it's Fugitive unit. While Sparks had eluded the long arm of Florida law for almost 3 decades, his case is by no means the oldest cold case. The Corrections department said some of their cases are older than 60 years.

Atlanta security officer shot www.privateofficer.com

ATLANTA Ga March 26 2010 -- Two people face charges in an early Friday morning shooting at a downtown strip club.

Thirty-one-year-old Patrick Denis and 26-year-old Glenmore Clarke are both charged with two counts of aggravated assault, possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony, and obstruction.

The shooting happened at Magic City around 3:45 a.m. Friday morning at Forsyth and Brotherton streets.

"All of a sudden, bam, bam, bam!" said Bobby Tookes, describing the shooting.

"These dogs just riding around and shooting and shooting everything," said Taiwon Davis, another witness.

Atlanta Police Sergeant Ed Baker said about 8-12 shots were fired in the parking lot. The gunfire followed a fight inside the club. It was unclear what the fight was about.

A security guard was treated and released from the hospital with a wound to the buttocks. A woman, believed to be a patron, was wounded in the leg. She is in fair condition at Grady.

The two suspects were caught at Central and Rawson streets. They tried to run from their car, but police chased them down. A police officer twisted her ankle in the chase but is expected to be fine.

The suspects are scheduled to make their first court appearance Saturday morning at 11 a.m.

Cal State professor charged with infant rape www.privateofficer.com

SAN FRANCISCO CA. March 26 2010 (KCBS) -- A Cal State East Bay assistant professor, already under arrest on child pornography charges here in the Bay Area, has also been charged with sex crimes against an infant child in Missouri.
St Louis County Police spokesman Rich Eckhard says they believe that Kenneth Kyle, 47, of San Francisco contacted Tessa Vervlerah of Ballwin, Missouri via the internet. Investigators say he then travelled to Missouri to engage in sex acts with the woman's 13-month-old child.

Kyle and Venvierah both are facing a variety of charges, including statutory rape, promoting child pornography, and other charges.

Eckhard says they believe this was going on for several months, so it's hard to tell just how old the child was when the crimes actually began.

Kyle was arrested March 15 at San Francisco International airport as he returned from a trip to Europe. The FBI had reportedly learned that Kyle had shared child pornography from his home computer, which lead to his initial arrest. Authorities say a search of his San Francisco home and his laptop turned up child pornography, and that lead to these new charges.

He says prosecutors have slapped each suspect with a $2 million cash-only bond, basically keeping both behind bars until they can have their day in court.

Shoplifter arrested after asking police for directions www.privateofficer.com

OREM, Utah March 26 2010 (AP) - Utah police say a man accused of stealing two phones from a convenience store was arrested when he flagged down the investigating officer and asked for directions.

Police say the officer noticed that John White matched the description a store clerk gave of the thief, and the address White wanted turned out to be the same one the officer was checking.

The address had been left on a slip of paper the thief left at a gas station.

White was arrested Tuesday after the officer found he had both phones, along with a small amount of marijuana.

Police say charges are pending.

11 Dead in I-65 crash www.privateofficer.com

MUNFORDVILLE, Ky.March 26 2010 - Kentucky State Police confirmed that at 11 people were killed in a collision between a tractor-trailer and a van on northbound Interstate 65 in south-central Kentucky Friday morning.

The death toll has risen by four since the fiery crash was first reported, but KSP Trooper Charles Swiney said two children survived the crash.

Dispatcher Kathy Tyree said the collision occurred at 5:16 a.m. CDT in Hart County near mile marker 63, which is near Munfordville, Kentucky.

Emergency Management Director Kerry McDaniel said the tractor-trailer was going south on I-65 when it crossed the median, striking the van head-on. The van was carrying men, women and children. A pastor at a southern Kentucky church said many of the victims were from a Kentucky-based Mennonite family.

After crashing into the van, the semi hit a rock wall and burst into flames. McDaniel said the truck driver was killed.

Kentucky State Police, Hart County Sheriff's Office, Kentucky Safe Patrol, Hart County Emergency Management Services, Munfordville Fire Department and the Hart County Coroners Office were all on the scene.

Northbound lanes of I-65 have been shut down, and a detour has been established.

According to a KSP press release, traffic is being diverted off of I-65 at exit 58 onto KY218. Traffic will then be diverted onto US31 east and then head north. Traffic will remain on KY61 until the intersection with I-65 at exit 91.

KSP said the interstate will be close for at least eight hours. The Tennessee Department of Transportation has been advising motorists to seek an alternate route north of Kentucky and plan for delays until the crash has been cleared.

I-65 southbound lanes have been affected by rubbernecking.

Greenville TN police officer gunned down by son www.privateofficer.com

GREENEVILLE TN March 26 2010 (WATE) - A Greeneville police officer's son is now charged in his father's murder.

Sgt. Roger Self was found dead in his home with a gunshot wound Wednesday night.

Thursday night Ethan Self, 18, was charged with first degree murder. The Greeneville High School senior is being held on $500,000 bond.

Greene County Sheriff Steve Burns says co-workers became concerned Wednesday night when Sgt. Self didn't show up for his 7:00 p.m. shift.

Officers stopped by his Love Street home and found his body. Authorities say Sgt. Self was shot at least once.

"Roger was a quiet, gentle officer who loved to do his job, didn't come to the forefront in a lot of things. He didn't want the publicity," said Sheriff Burns. "He was just a good man."

Sgt. Self's body was sent to Johnson City Medical Center for an autopsy.

NYPD detective solves 29 year old serial killings www.privateofficer.com

Bronx NY March 25 2010
Source: NY Times A very good detective did a very good job, and Wednesday a suspected serial killer was brought into a Bronx courtroom charged with a killing that went unsolved for almost three decades.

"Jesus Aguilera, aka Jesus Aguilero," the court officer called out.

Aguilera was led in from the holding area, bald and bearded and burly, the cold eyes behind his state-issue spectacles going colder still at the sight of Detective Malcolm Reiman.

Aguilera was already doing double life for two other killings, and a third would not mean a minute more behind bars, but his reaction proved how much he still resented being caught.

Maybe Aguilera had always taken delight in thinking of poor 35-year-old Tolila Moore lying strangled in a shack on Minford Place and telling himself at least he got away with that one.

Maybe all Aguilera's killings were about power and control, and now here he was, bested by this detective who is so diligent and dedicated as to represent justice.

Evil met good and good won, with considerable help beginning with a crime scene investigator back in the wild days of 1981.

The murder of a woman with a record for prostitution had drawn not even a shrug from the public and the press, but the investigator had taken the time and trouble to lift a fingerprint.

Additional help came from investigators in the latent print unit who periodically sought to identify the fingerprint as technology advanced.

In June of last year, the latent print unit called Lt. Sean O'Toole of the Bronx homicide squad and said it finally had a match, with one Jose Aguilera.

O'Toole assigned Reiman, who retrieved the case folder from the microfiche file. Reiman contacted the original detective, now retired, who had taken the case as far as the forensics of the time allowed.

"Good guy," Reiman later noted. "He did some good work."

Reiman got critical help from the medical examiner's office, which had retained scrapings taken from under Moore's fingernails. A DNA profile from the scrapings was fed into the database.

"Sure enough, a hit for our Mr. Aguilera," Reiman recalled.

Aguilera was already behind bars for strangling two others in 1981, Guillermo Graniela on Aug. 29 in what may have been a robbery and Josepfina Cepeda on Sept. 17, just before and just after Moore's Sept. 2 killing. Cepeda had been lured to her death with the promise of designer jeans.

Reiman learned that this man he believes to be a serial killer came to America in the infamous Marielito boatlift. He had been escorted by a Cuban prison officer to a boat bound for Key West, Fla. Aguilera was held in the refugee detention center at Fort Chafee in Arkansas, then released to his brother.

In May of 1981, Aguilera arrived in New York. He is believed to have strangled at least four people during the nine months before he was arrested. He was in Great Meadow prison when Reiman came to speak to him.

"He really wasn't shocked," Reiman recalled.

But he was not very happy if his reaction in Bronx court yesterday was any indication. He was asked to enter a plea.

"Innocent," he said through an interpreter.

That means he will go to trial. He will no doubt have more than a few icy stares for Assistant District Attorney Rachel Singer, who is as diligent and dedicated as everybody else involved.

Aguilera will also learn just how strong a case Reiman has built, gathering evidence from the property clerk's office as well as the medical examiner, tracking down cops who responded to the scene and anybody who might have been a witness.

"Try to get everything I can," Reiman said.

The stepfather who identified Moore's body has died, as has her mother, and there were no other known family members to be in court when Aguilera was arraigned.

But there was Reiman, sitting quietly with a brown case folder marked "Tolila Moore, F/B/35, 1-1/02/1981, Method: Ligature Strangulation Homicide." The papers inside documented the work done by all those who joined to meet evil with good.

"It's very satisfying, actually," Reiman said.

Riverside CA. teacher drunk in class arrested www.privateofficer.com

Palm Springs CA March 25 2010 A Thermal middle school teacher was arrested on Tuesday on suspicion of being under the influence of prescription drugs and alcohol during the school day, officials said.
Administrators at Toro Canyon Middle School reported around 1 p.m. Tuesday that Tonya Neff, 47, was showing signs of intoxication, according to the Riverside County Sheriff's Department.
“Our students were safe,” Coachella Valley Unified School District Superintendent Ricardo Medina said. “There was never any threat to the students.”
She was taken from the classroom to the administration and was treated by the school nurse, officials said.
Responding officers transported her to John F. Kennedy Hospital for treatment, the sheriff's department reported.
Investigation showed that she had taken prescription drugs and alcohol and a container with an alcoholic beverage inside was found, according to the sheriff's department.
“Our administration handled it in an appropriate manner,” Medina said, calling it an unfortunate situation. “They exercised due diligence and they involved the police when they felt they needed to involve the police.”
Neff is a new teacher and this type of incident has not been reported before, he said.
“Neff is regularly responsible for the safety of over 100 students during her regular school day duties,” Sgt. Mike Tapp wrote in a press release.
Neff was arrested on suspicion of felony child endangerment and was transported to the Riverside County Jail in Indio.
The school district will place her on leave during the investigation, but it has not been determined whether it will be paid leave or not, Medina said.
“It all depends on the circumstances,” he said.

Security officer contains fire at Capitol Theatre www.privateofficer.com

SALT LAKE CITY Utah March 25 2010 -- A police officer working as a security guard saved the day when he stopped a fire burning backstage at Salt Lake City's historic Capitol Theatre.

When the officer spotted the flames climbing one of the curtains backstage, he quickly sprang to action, using two fire extinguishers to contain the fire until firefighters arrived.

Sgt. Mark Burgess of the Unified Police Department said, "By his quick thinking, we averted a huge disaster."

The question for many theatre lovers is, will the show go on?

Right now, the musical "Legally Blonde" is running at the Capitol Theatre, and Wednesday night there's a showing at 7:30. That show will go on as planned; however, theatre representatives say between now and then, they have a lot of cleaning up to do.

Firefighters were called to the historic Capitol Theatre located on 200 S. near West Temple shortly after 7:30 a.m. Wednesday.

The building is under 24-hour security, and the officer on duty had smelled something suspicious coming from the stage area. As he headed to check on it, he reported hearing popping sounds. When he got closer, he saw one of the curtains going up in flames.

"It's a very large curtain that sits toward the back of the building, and it was climbing all the way to the ceiling," Burgess said.

Burgess says the officer quickly grabbed two fire extinguishers and knocked down the fire, then when firefighters arrived they finished it off.

Firefighters say there was a little smoke damage in the theatre and a little bit of water damage behind the stage, but other than that everything looks to be OK.

"We got very lucky," said Battalion Chief Clair Baldwin of the Salt Lake City Fire Department. "We have access issues, we have all kinds of remodeling that has been done over a 80-90 year period, so this buildings does present some problems. If it was to catch fire and actually involve the structural members, it would be a difficult fire to put out."

Investigators say this fire was caused by curtain draped over a ladder that was leaning up against a light powered by a generator.

That generator runs a test every Wednesday morning at 7:30. When it turned on it powered that light, which caught the curtain on fire.

Memphis school security officer charged with rape www.privateofficer.com

MEMPHIS, Tenn. March 25 2010
Source: Fox News Memphis - A Memphis City School security guard has been charged with the rape of a 16-year-old Mitchell High School student. It's the second such investigation involving a school officer in two weeks. One State Representative said it does not help the district's case as it lobbies for legislative approval for its own police force.

The security guard was charged Wednesday evening with statutory rape by an authority figure. The superintendent has said he wants the district to have it's own police officers trained to solve problems rather than just arrest and transport.
But the recent arrest has at least one lawmaker questioning if the district can handle it.

One week after Memphis City School officials were in Nashville lobbying for their own police force, school security guard 31-year old Antonio Matthews was charged with the alleged rape of a 16-year old Mitchell High School student.

Representative John DeBerry (D-Memphis) said he listened to the district's plea with an open mind but this incident raises flags.

"I'll say this does not help the case as far as us trying to make a decision, a positive decision, toward creating a totally separate force."

This is the second year the district is seeking legislative approval for its own police force, even though the idea is opposed by Memphis Police Director Larry Godwin and Memphis Mayor A C Wharton.

Representative DeBerry said during his tenure, he personally worked to strengthen rape laws. "The one thing we should be able to have confidence is safety of our children, at least those who watching them, and ensure their safety."

A check of court records showed the guard has no criminal history. Memphis City School Board President Martavius Jones questioned how to prevent incidents if there is no prior history. He said the incident could have happened whether the guard was employed by the school or Memphis Police.

In fact, last month, a Memphis Police Officer working as a School Resource Officer was accused of raping a female student from Fairley High School. The officer has been relieved of duty without pay, and police say the case is still under investigation.

Representative DeBerry said, "I think what this will do is make all of us step back and just for a minute and realize when we put a group of people in proximity of our children we have to be very careful to make sure these are people who are going to protect our children not victimize our children."

Wednesday, the MCS police force House bill was placed on the Judiciary Committee calendar to be heard Tuesday.
