Brother of Dallas officer robs bank, commits suicide www.privateofficer.com

Dallas TX Dec 28 2010 A 26-year-old man apparently stole the gun of his brother — a Dallas police officer — and killed himself with it after attempting to rob a Far North Dallas bank Monday, police said.

Investigators said the officer, who they declined to identify, did not know that his service weapon had been taken until after his brother, Khalifa Tehran King, shot himself.

“The officer is totally irrelevant to this thing,” Dallas police Deputy Chief Craig Miller said. “He has nothing to do with it at all.”

Officers responding to an 11:30 a.m. suspicious person call at an apartment complex in the 5300 block of Harvest Hill Road near the Dallas North Tollway spotted King. Plainclothes officers watched him as he drove about two miles north and attempted to enter the Sterling Bank in the 5000 block of Verde Valley Lane, police said.

Bank employees saw King, dressed in all black, about to enter the building and locked the doors to keep him out, police said.

A similar incident occurred at the bank Friday. In that case, a man now believed to be King was wearing a ski mask and a white shopping bag on one hand. He tried to enter the bank, but employees locked him out.

After being locked out Monday, King got back in his vehicle and fled when uniformed officers attempted to stop him. A brief chase ensued and King pulled into a business parking lot near the Tollway and Harvest Hill Road, police said.

It appeared King was going to surrender, but he then pulled a gun and shot himself, police said. He died at the scene.

King is thought to be from Kansas. It is unclear how long he had been in the Dallas area, police said.

The Dallas police Special Investigations Unit was investigating the case Monday.
