Wilcox high teacher arrested for student sex incidents

Santa Clara CA Aug 27 2009
A special-education teacher at Wilcox High School who is accused of having sex with a 17-year-old female student was arraigned this afternoon on multiple felony charges.
Edward Slate, 41, was charged with two felony counts of oral copulation with a minor, two felony counts of sexual penetration of a person under 18 and two felony counts of sodomy with a person under 18, according to Amy Cornell, a district attorney's office spokeswoman. Slate was also charged with one misdemeanor count of annoying or molesting a child, Cornell said.
Slate faces a maximum sentence of six years and four months behind bars if convicted of all the charges, Cornell said.
Bail was set at $60,000. Slate, who remained in custody as of today, is scheduled to enter a plea on Sept. 18.
Slate was arrested Monday at Wilcox High in Santa Clara by officers from the Sunnyvale Department of Public Safety. Slate, who is listed on the school's Web site as a special-education teacher, met the 17-year-old girl on campus during the last school year and struck up a relationship, according to police Capt. Doug Moretto. Police allege that the sexual acts happened off campus in Sunnyvale between January and June
