http://www.privateofficer.com/ The work of a school security officer is never done, even when regular classes are out and summer has begun. The Metro Nashville security team is still working as hard as ever and tackling problems and security issues. The team will stay in session throught-out the schools summer vacation period. As one officer put it, problems didn’t take a vaction so we have to be here.
That’s because the Metro schools are still operating and in full swing as they change gears to summer school, special programs and other activities across the citys campuses.
According to Metro, for the past week and a half security teams have conducted drug and weapons sweeps at several summer school locations, and they have found box cutters, knives, and drugs. Just last week, police found marijuana during a search Glencliff High School.
Administrators say that they are trying to send a clear message to students that Summer School classes will be both safely and orderly. Parents and administrators are relieved to know the district is being proactive.
"You know it's the best thing to do try and get all this stuff out of school," said parent, Randall Coleman.
"I think they've been vital to ensuring safe schools and a safe environment, and I think they're very effective," said principal Philip Hammonds.
The Metro school system employs for in-house security staff and school resource officers who are Metro Nashville police officers.
So far administrators say it has been a peaceful few weeks to start summer school. They are hopeful it will continue along that path for the rest of the summer; however, security teams are posted at each school site to ensure students are in a safe learning environment.
