FULSHEAR TX. Dec. 15, 2007— Police have not determined how two men got into a gated Fort Bend County community where they bluffed their way into a house and fatally stabbed a retired schoolteacher in a robbery attempt.
Martha Fields, 54, of the 32800 block of Waltham Crossing, in the Weston Lakes subdivision, was attacked Tuesday morning and died Thursday at Memorial Hermann Hospital in Houston.
"We don't know if they snuck in through the back or what they did to get in. We are still trying to figure that part out," Sheriff's Office Chief Deputy Craig Brady said Friday.
Brady said there have been no similar crimes in the area.
Although police are still investigating, at least one Weston Lakes resident, Willie Krause, says that security at the gates is sometimes lax and that construction workers and laborers come and go without being stopped.
"It is not hard to get in at all," Krause said.
Deputies were called to the home about 11 a.m. after the victim, despite several stab wounds, managed to get to a phone and call for help, said sheriff's spokeswoman Terriann Carlson.
'Hit us right in the heart'Fields told police the men appeared at her door saying they were delivering a package. The pair then got into the house where they demanded money, tied her up, and stabbed her numerous times.
The intruders then fled without taking anything.
Police talked to neighbors but no one saw a vehicle fleeing the scene.
The neighborhood is in a growing semi-rural area north of the Brazos River and just outside Fulshear. Homes are being built there, and Krause said there should be more stringent security checks at the gate on the various workers who enter the neighborhood.
"They check the ID of the driver but not of the four or five guys in the car," Krause said.
Krause said many residents are angry and frightened.
"This hit us right in the heart," he said. "This should not have happened."
Homeowner association officials could not be reached for comment Friday.
Meanwhile, the students and staff at Huggins Elementary School where Fields last taught were trying to cope with the tragedy.
"We are just trying to keep our kids focused. They have been very sad to hear the news about Miss Fields," said Principal Irma Nurre.
Nurre said Fields, who taught the fourth grade, was a great teacher and was loved by her students.
"She was very caring, very nurturing. She was one who put the kids first and did what ever it took to make things happen for kids," Nurre said.
Fields worked at the school for only a year after a long career with the Houston and Aldine school districts. She said Fields retired to tend to a family illness.
Anyone with information is asked to contact the Fort Bend County Sheriff's Office at 281-341-4665 or Fort Bend County Crime Stoppers at 281-342-TIPS (8477). Crime Stoppers is offering a $5,000 reward.
Carlson said the residents of Weston Lakes are also offering a $35,000 reward for information about the case.
"We need to catch them quick," Brady said

Willie Krause is the most racist person I have ever meet in Weston Lakes and I can't believe that his comments made this article.
